I wasn't paying attention. it was done two repeaters. one is 2m, the other 70. 20 miles away. Should I write this info down? would it help me purchase the right radio? both are FM
2M is VHF and 70cm is UHF. 20 miles is doable by a handheld.. I've made contacts with my Beofang UV-5R with a repeater that is around 23 miles away. Not always the best.. but doable. Once I get the Jpole finished I should have no issues out to perhaps 50 miles. Nice thing with Repeaterbook is it will show you what modes are available also. Check settings out and experiment.
I'm glad your enjoying it Chaz, you've come a long way.... I'd like to look into the online exams, any testing around here seems 2 hrs away. Something proctored online would be great!
oh it's a rabbit hole, you'll spend a bit nothing wrong with being a spectator either.. If you have an android there is an app on the playstore called hamradioexam tech. It gives you the questions and highlights the correct answers so can familiarize yourself.
I'll get it now. I have been looking at options. Some websites say no need for a book, others say yes. I have a cop friend who says you can find dope growers with a handheld real easy? You can even tell what kind of lighting they use outside of the production area. Rabbit hole indeed. system overload on the brain panel
Link.. It shows remote online testing as well as in person testing. HamStudy.org: Find a test session
I just checked that website Chaz. Nothing in my area, but not surprised. I just found the test contact info on the ARRL website. Online would be awesome
Agreed.. Nothing wrong with being a spectator, just that I know I'd get bored listening only. Check out WebSDR there are many places you can tune in to listen. websdr.org
There's online testing listed as well, I know most of the online testing requires zoom video conferencing. I know nothing about zoom
I'm studying for the general test. Looks like I can test July 18th if we aren't locked down again. I'm not buying anything until then. The studying part doesn't really teach you anything on how to operate the Hams. I did find one guy in our town by word of mouth, but he won't talk to me. Pretty paranoid fella. Reminds me of this guy..... He has a old chuck wagon with some blanket insulation over it. He asked me how I knew, and who told me.
