Auction buy Stihl 026

Went out on a limb and bought a used chainsaw off an online auction. Pictures were pretty bland, but took a chance. Picked it up today, brought it home, checked gas and added bar oil. The ole thing started on the 4th pull. He must have taken pretty good care of it. Bought a separate lot that had the chains in it. Though it had 3, actually had 6 in the bucket. 4 brand new ones to boot. Paid 190 for the saw and 40 for the chains. Seemed decent to me. Thoughts, advice? Thanks y'all.

 

Nice score My 260 is my favorite and go to saw for 90% of what I do. A muffler mod and performance kit makes this good saw gooder

Rebuilt a scorched 026 to flip. Wrong color for me.
But kept it cause its healthy little saw.
If I had a pickup truck, it’s what I would keep in it. For a while anyway.

 

Seems like a good deal, especially with the 6 extra chains and the saw box. The box and chains sell new for just under what you spent on the whole package. Add the value of the bar and you got the power unit for free.

 

I've got 2 of em, one ported & one stock. Nice light saws & decent power. You did good at that price!

 

I thought it seemed alright. I was fully prepared to have to open it up an try to fix it. Very happy to have it fire pretty easily.

 

I'm working on getting one. The current owner wants to tune it up before I buy it.

 

Nothing wrong with that. Fresh tune ups are always nice.

 

You did good Gavorosalini the 026 is one of my favorite saws (along with all my other saws) and that’s a great price. You Shouldn’t need any chains for awhile!

 

That would have been a little to high of a price for me with a saw at that age. Only because it will need work because all the small rubber pieces that are in them. Like crank seals, fuel line, and intake boot.
But they are a good running saw.

 

Depending on how it was treated before OP bought it at the auction, he may have years of service before he starts replacing parts.

My 036 and 044 have been trouble free rubber wise.. ...the 044 may need some now because a carb rebuild didn't fix all it's running problems. I've put more bearing, clutch drums, bars and chains into my saws. For the most part the rubber parts are easy to change and are under $20 oem....$5 Chinese knock off....which often don't last long.

That saw would have gone for $260 in a day on Facebook around here. $10 for each chain and #35 for the case. I don't buy at those prices but I watch them sell to have a feel what the market is doing.

 

I have 2 Stihl 036's that I bought used in very nice shape with bars for 225.00. They worked great for about 2 years and then I had to do crank seals. I use my saws and I use them a lot. I agree it is a cheap fix for the seals if you know how to replace them.

I am curious, what is a tune up on a chain saw. A new spark plug, fuel filter, and clean the air filter.

 

New plug and filters is around $40 for OEM. Chinese parts is about $8. For $17 you get Chinese filters, plug, fuel and oil line and carburetor.

I don't trust Chinese spark plugs and rubber parts. Filters are ok. Carburetor on my Stihl tiller is Chinese copy...after I found out OEM was Chinese too.

 

So who makes ZAMA carbs that come on some of the Stihl products. Answer China.

 

I opened it up today to do some cleaning and inspecting. Noticed both sides of the bar are splayed out and sharp. Also noticed at the end of the bar right before the sprocket, a few chunks are missing. Chain seemed a little loose in the bar too. The paints all gone on this bar, may be time to replace it I think.

 

I think you did good. Im nervous buying used from unreliable source as fixing them is not my thing. Basic work and tune ups yes, but other stuff no. I owned a 260 from 1993 til 2010. Cut a lot of wood with it. I own a 261 now which is what it evolved into. Totally different saw though.

 

Yup, new bar in your future. Do you own any other Stihl's? Maybe your can swap bars. Ive swapped bars between my 290 and 261.
