A little after 4 this afternoon im en route to my friends to split some wood (i guess you could call it a FHC version of happy hour). Im a few houses from his driveway and i pass this. Another case of FHC whiplash. Wasnt there yesterday when i drove by. I turned around to check it out. Neighbor cutting his grass and i asked him, wasnt his yard. Pulled into next driveway and knocked, guy answers and i get the okay. By a stroke of luck i had the 261 with me. I try not to use the saw at my friends to keep the noise level down. Nice straight trunked sugar maple. WooHoo Bucked all there except the trunk chunks. 20" DBH. Quick stop at my friends to unload. Probably couldve loaded the bigger rounds intact but this is some heavy stuff. Ill take the 460 to buck the trunk tomorrow.
No words, Brad. I got nothing. I read these finds of yours and all I can do now is shake my head in amazement. Nicely done with sugar maple. Hoard on, guy. Hoard on.
I shake MY head in amazement too Mike cuz all i wanna do is go back and work prior scores that are unfinished (has to be around six) and more wood just seems to find me! Not that its a bad thing. If the wood is crap (gnarly/rotted/junk species) i wont touch it. Guess ive turned into a snob of sorts. This is some primo straight SM and i had time and saw. Had to act fast.
All I can do is shake my head as well. There are hoarders and then there is buZZsaw BRAD. You have a serious case of Wood hoarders missed score derangenment syndrome (WHMSDS).
Well done as always Brad! You & your FHC buddies from Connecticut are gonna get that State clear cut yet!
Went back with the 460 yesterday afternoon and bucked the trunk. The homeowner came out and at first i thought he changed his mind, but he didnt think i was coming back. Chatted with him a bit. His wife came out later and gave me a water. Sectioned them with the Isocore to load. Some had to be noodled. IMO sugar maple is one of the toughest on chains. At least 75% of a cord for the score. Rather than bring them to my friends to be split i brought them home to split right away. I brought the first load there on Friday. Its a 20 minute round trip to his place from here and id prefer not to split there. IME fresh cut green wood hand splits a lot easier than if the ends dry and start to check. Had some time before supper and split most of it. Split easily using mostly the X27. Made some real nice firewood! NOTE: there was some wood already split in the lower right of the stack. Just a few chunks left to split and noodle Ive never had SM bark come off so easy while splitting. Maybe 1/3 of the bark popped off on its own. I dont normally try to take bark off while splitting and wasnt here either.
NOW NOW Horkn ! He asked if i slept with the saw, to which i replied "No we just cuddle", but if it were to happen, yes im a firm believer in "safe" sawing!
