This is not the way I wanted to spend my nightWe were just sitting in having some beers catching up on netflixs I took the dogs outside for the last time and my border collie took off running I figured it was a rabbit it was a skunk so we had to wash the dog outside in the dark with the stench of a skunk
Skunks are a pain. Sorry you had to deal with that mess. Had one come up on the other end of the deck last year, early in the morning. He was going for the bird feed. I was standing right there and made it known. He couldn't care less and came up the stairs twice in 30 seconds as I kept making noise. I hooked Giz on a leash and let her see him (he was 20' away)... she started shriekin' and off he went. No spray. Haven't seen him this year but... I was surprised at how he moved so quick... very cat like. If Giz was off leash, she'd get sprayed for sure.
Tomatoe sauce is one skunk stink remedy I used to use. My boxer got nailed right in the face a few years back with the spray that he went into a seizure. Sucks
big bottle of peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and a little dish soap. Leave on for 5 minutes, rinse and bath with regular dog shampoo or just some more dish soap.
This happened last year too so we were at least prepared. Weve tried the peroxide/baking soda thing it didnt work that well. We have something from the pet store that works decently I think the biggest trick is to get to it right away before the oil has time to soak in. We started washing him last night within about 5 minutes of the attack and this morning yes he still smells a little but not nearly as bad as he did last night.
While you're at it... see if you can figure out why porcupines are here too... other than to drive me nuts...
I haven't smelled a skunk in ~8yrs. There aren't any in this region of Alabama, which is odd because we have all kinds of other wildlife. Don't have any porcupines either. I guess the Armadillos take up the slack but they are pretty harmless and they have a hard time crossing roads
They aren't a problem in this area. Other areas of the state have bigger populations/problems. A neighbor down the road put some serious money into a hogwire fence around his few hundred acre soybean/corn fields. He must have had some crop loss but I've never seen them and I spend a good bit of time in the woods.
Have they ever killed anyone out for a stroll in the woods? With as many as are down that way, and they'll eat anything, it must have happened. My brother said in Iowa, it's pretty common to hear of at least one pig farmer a year getting taken out by the pigs by being in the wrong place, wrong time. And vids of the wild hogs on a tear, doesn't look like something anyone would want to be in front of.
Stinny, my Dad always told us boys that a porky is dead man's meat. I asked him to explain, he said if you are lost in the woods with no weapons, you can always kill a porky and won't starve anyway. Other than that, I think their only purpose is to see if they can improve their personal best for number of quills in a dog's mouth/throat!
"Other than that, I think their only purpose is to see if they can improve their personal best for number of quills in a dog's mouth/throat!" Ugh... don't remind me... 4 times with the same husky... each time pizzed her off worse, so more quills. Last time, son is bear hugging her as hard as he can while I'm pullin quills from way down her throat so she didn't choke on em. Other quills up thru top of her snout. It was Sunday morning, we somehow found a clinic 40 miles away that would see her, they knocked her out to get the rest. Lucky dog. Long day.
