Picked this up in a score about a month or two ago and just got around to splitting. The score was a mix of Oak and Maple. Originally thought was some kind of oak but when I split I starting thinking some kind of maple but was different from other maple is the score. The dark color middle had a distinct smell similar to manure. Round touching the ground is Oak, its the splits on top of that. Thanks in advance!
Split on top looks like hickory, but bark doesnt. Bark has a "white oak" look to it, but its not white oak. White oak smells like whiskey. Was it hand or hydro split?
Same here, I swore looking at the bark it was some type of an Oak. It was hand split and didn't smell like any oak I've split, I've got that smell and grain look down pretty good. Not sure what rack to throw into for drying times.
The splits look clean, not stringy, so what I'm bout to say doesnt make sense from the split face standpoint.... But the bark looks kinda like sweetgum to me.....
Walnut maybe??? It has the dark heartwood. Check for a center pith and if so look for these. Little "dividers" in the pith. I had cut some "mystery" wood back in Early March and posted Mystree #2? Did i score black walnut?
I will check that out Brad, thanks! I have another pretty nice sized round of it I need to split. Yeah that dark heartwood really sets it apart and the smell of that heartwood is distinct for sure, almost identical to a garden manure.
the only and last gum ive ever split. Black gum aka tupelo It Takes a Lot of GUMption to Hand Split Tupelo!
I have seen tulip poplar with a dark center like that before but the bark doesn’t look right for that
I have some stacked along side the house. For the first couple weeks it would smell every time it warmed up and rained. (I haven't burned any yet.) The whole house smelled inside when I used a piece to make a bowl on the lathe. (lathe is in the basement) the bowl looked great though.
