Hope y’all are as well as possible these days. Have a question about tuning my CS-501P. The manual says WOT should be 13.8krpm. After doing some muffler modding, I tuned by ear to about 12krpm. After I hooked up the tach, I ended up at 12.8krpm WOT as it sounded too lean at 13.5krpm.

What do you think I should actually use as target WOT rpm? Does anyone want to discuss the how to tune high jets? I searched around this forum and didn’t see anyone discussing this exactly. Apologies for missing it as I’m sure I did! Feel free to link any info rather than type it out, and again sorry for not finding it myself!

Run a tank through it, shut it off without idling, and check the spark plug color. It’s not crazy scientific, but you want somewhere between cardboard and chocolate for color.
If that doesn’t work, stick with your ear. Better safe than sorry

This video does a fair job of describing what to listen for. He could have done a little more lifting and loading the saw once in the wood so you can hear the burble(4 stroking), but it should help you out.

    Thanks for the input!

I’m wondering what the downsides are to running rich vs lean. I know too lean gets you less power and higher pressures that might blow up the saw, but what is the upside? Lower emissions?

Same for rich, I know it’s safer and within reason makes more power, and that too rich will cause carbon buildup on things, but what else is a downside to too rich?

Sorry for the newb questions, but want to make sure I am making educated decisions.

    Thanks all!

How new is the saw, how many tanks of fuel through it? The echos seem to take a ton of run time to wake up. Might be why you are still seeing lower rpms. Also like huskihl says a little rich won’t hurt and check the plug.
I know a guy who has a pretty sweet 501p maybe he can throw in his $.02 Barcroftb

It probably has 5-6 tanks through it. It will definitely get to 13.8krpm, but sounds so lean it is way too scary to leave it there.

I haven’t gotten to run the saw for a whole tank yet, but I’ll hopefully do that soon to check the plug.

Barcroftb has already helped me by showing me how to mm the saw. It really woke up when I got the exhaust opened up a bit.

    Thanks for the input!

Mine ends up somewhere in the 12,900-13,200 range. I like it to four stroke when I let up in the cut but clean up when I let it cut. Your saw/tac might vary slightly.

Fantastic help, thank you! I ended up right in that range tuning by ear with the tach info incorporated. Reassuring, thanks again!
