Also, the Mesh bag for collection is not proven, but if the spores can't make their way out, like in a plastic bag, then it's a lot less possible that the spores can escape to produce future shrooms. What sucks is that unlike other shrooms, nobody's been successful with farming these.
I reckon I found some morels, I reckon Never tried them. I guess I'll just heat them through in a little butter, salt n pepper. And see if I like them at all I read where they can be frozen. So I'll do that until any others can be found.
Nice MikeInMa! I'm taking mental notes for next year. Fiddle heads just up, soil temp at 50, maple saplings just sprouting, Aspen leafing out. Heading out for another look see.
Fiddle heads are also something I've never tried. I know they are ferns just as they begin to unroll. Are they any fern?
Yes, afaik, all fiddleheads are edible. I've not every eaten or harvested wild ones. I think I've only had then once while at a restaurant. Now if I was in the woods and needing food, fiddleheads would be at the top of the list.
Soak in salt water for a couple hours, lightly toss is flour, saute in butter, salt and pepper, and enjoy. Only eat a few the first time. Sometimes people are allergic to them. Had a buddy that tried some for the first time at a camp out and in a few minutes one of his ears tripled in size. Now he eats them without any trouble.
I spent a little time in the woods Wednesday but found no morels yet. I'm in NW Wisconsin and it seems that when the asparagus come up and the lilacs start to bloom it's time to start looking. My asparagus is up but the lilacs are not yet blooming. I dry the extras but have learned to use a low 120 degrees or they can turn dark. After they are dry I vacuum seal them in pint jars and they will last a long time. I think that morels go best with venison but are good in many things.
Ooh, a hen of the woods shroom too. I've never tried them. I walked my woodlot's shroom spots, and there was nothing yet, not even hen of the woods. Mayflowers just popped up, so it will be soon. I know I won't see any morels until the hen of the woods shrooms are out.
These are the first 2 I’ve ever found on purpose. Found them near a dead elm tree that I’ve had my eye on. Had a pretty hard frost the night before and they were frozen.
Did you cut the one on the right open? Was it hollow? The false morels I have seen, have been "disformed" like that. The true morels have always been more "christmas tree" shaped...
Yeah I cut them open to make sure they were real, and they were. But they were past being very good and were frozen
