Finally got a chance to split the black locust off
my trailer! Had to use my new Husqvarna 455 Rancher
first to cut down some of the rounds to 16".
The fly-by-night tree service people weren't consistent
at all cutting to length, pretty normal.
We're getting rain for the next 3-4 days, so the next
nice day I'll be splitting the black locust off my truck. IMG_0971.JPG IMG_0974.JPG IMG_0975.JPG

 Some gorgeous splits. I hear ya on the tree service wood.:headbang::hair: PITA with all the oddball lengths!
Been filling a half cord bin with just locust shorts/nuglies from the past few months of scrounging someone elses cutting.

You’re gonna like the 455! I’ve had mine for over 10 years and it has served me well, harvesting well over 100 cord with it. Only ever had to replace the Oiler and the drive sprocket. Other than that, just routine maintenance. I will be moving into the pro class of his war a saws next, but it won’t be because the 455 didn’t meet my expectations. Nice looking pile of locust you were able to get split up. Good way to break in the new saw:yes:

Ive discovered this in recent months. Is the result the same if you fell a living tree and allow it to sit for a year or two prior to bucking Eric VW ? Ive noticed the green fresh cut not as heavy or dense as dead wood. Really starting to appreciate and love BL in my few months of experience with it. One score o worked still has 3-4 decent trees blown over from two years ago. I was tempted to go and just remove the bark. Let the schmutz under the bark wash off then harvest in the Fall.

So I finally got the chance to split the Black Locust off my truck
after cutting all the longer pieces down to 16". Now all I have to
do is get the energy to stack it with what I split/stacked last week
    off the trailer! IMG_0988.JPG IMG_0990.JPG

Brad, my compulsive self takes the bark off green BL, with a hammer and chisel.

I understand. My compulsive self causes me to hoard more wood! :tree:
Maybe over the Summer ill go remove the bark from those four trees. The schmutz under the bark can be some dirty/dusty stuff. Of the roughly 4 1/2 cords of BL ive scrounged, id say 30% was green/bark on.
Have you ever scored any dead barkless BL?

Yes I have, it's a treat! Also some that you could scuff the bark off by hand. I did leave some lengths that had been down for a bit in a pile, and they got soggy over the summer. The tiny white maggots chewed up the inner bark, and made it very easy to remove.

Nice looking load of locust JJP in Ohio , that trailer looks like it has it's work cut out for itself. By the way, nice looking trailer and the 455 is a great saw.

Bark removal, next level dedication! Does the odor dissipate quickly? I know the smell when the bark comes off is quite strong sometimes

The bark is what stinks. Barkless BL doesn't smell bad when burned, in my experience.
