I finally found some time to split some of the oak that I scored a while back. http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/index.php?threads/nice-load-of-red-oak.4442/ It should end up being a cord or so when I get it stacked. I still have to split the shorties and toss them into another pile. Hopefully I can get the shorties split tomorrow then move on to some soft maple. Here are some pictures of what I ended up with. It's always fun splitting straight grained oak. I probably didn't end up with more than a handful of ugly splits. Shorties that I have left to split.
That pile of splits is a thing of beauty ! Red oak splits & stacks nice. Like you hand truck, I copied you idea & use one now, Goes to the cutting area to help load the big ones.
Nice. Love the smell of the splits of red oak. Will be some nice BTU's come a couple years from now....
I get alot of red oak and there's nothin easier to split than the nice straight grain stuff. Most of the time it just pops apart soon as the wedge touches it. Good job on that pile!
This stuff will have a ways to go. I keep about 8 cords on the other side of those sheds, that's this seasons wood and the season after. This oak will get 3 or 4 years so it goes to the back of the yard which will be about a 500' move. The hand truck is a true back saver! When I started getting wood from the tree service guy most of it was/is big, my back wasn't having any part of that. Some of the best money I ever spent, makes loading much easier. IIRC you're also a back patient so I'm sure you understand.
I create so much more work with multiple moves it's sickening. At some point I'll cut a path to the back of my yard so I can get the truck and trailer back there so I can do all the splitting/stacking in the back. Then I'll build a shed near the house to hold one seasons worth.
The only moving I do now is once a day in winter. I fill my wheelbarrow and roll it about 100 feet. Moving firewood is a pain. Nice load of wood there.
Nice pile split oak there I rolled up a lot of big old rounds into my trailer with my hand truck works fantastic
