Im splitting this afternoon. Dead locust round maybe 8-10" diameter. First hit with the Fiskars and it splits but not all the way. I go to pull it apart and there something moving in it. Pull apart more and see the little beady eyes...a mouse! Imagine my surprise! How'd it get in there? Ran and got the camera, but it jumped out before i could get a pic and scooted under a stack. I didnt see the open knot hole on the other side of the round. It and a void made for a perfect home. Nesting material, but no babies. nest between splits on ground. Ants, borers, pill bugs, and multi legged creepy crawlies are the usual norm inside rounds, but a mouse? Log got split and stacked, mouse evicted! Ill probably run into it when i unstack in the Fall!
You do know that it's illegal to relocate wild animals, right? Best you find it and return it, before the mammal police find out.
it relocated itself while i ran around screaming like a chick!...just kidding on the second part. It was a smart mouse as it knew good btu wood when it saw it...ran under the white oak stack! The round had been sitting there a few days so mustve moved in!
I cut a chunk out of a fallen cherry tree last winter to see if wood was still good and found this. Not sure what kind of mouse but there was 3 of them and they acted like they were hibernating untill my saw woke them!
