hickory?

Hey guys what is this?..dense..stringy and hard as heck to split...

 

Bark pic is too blurry for me to say.

 

Elm?

 

I never had any hickory to compare it to. Pics are kinda blurry

 

I think so but I've only see Shagbark and Pignut here, that I have IDed. Not sure what types of Hickory are common where you are...

So elm is white all the way thru?..thats cool elm is good stuff..

 

I'd say that looks more like hickory than elm.....pignut or mockernut

 

I see flat rectangular bark and thick contrasting rings in the cut. Just looks like Elm. Either one is good wood.

 

Bark isn't Shagbark or Shellbark,the wood is similar in color/texture to American Elm,but its normally interlocked & not often straight grained like the specimen in the photo. Good stuff either way.

 

I just noticed the curled bark in the last pic; Hickory does that. Can you get a better pic of the bark?
C'mon guys, you all know perfectly well that Elm is nowhere near the firewood that Hickory is.

That redish brown underskin in the first picture is what makes me say hickory.

 

So hickory has the reddish brown underskin?..dosent some hickory have a brown streak in the heartwood also...ill try to get a better pic of the bark..

 

Yes, I see some Hickory with light brown heartwood but I think it can vary. Mainly what I'm going on is the bark. Curled up where it's coming off in the third pic, but I'd really like to see a clearer version of that first pic...looks like classic segmented Hickory bark.
