Really nice day here is Southern Connecticut. Sunny with temps around 70 with a nice breeze. Great day to be out cutting. Cut and hauled this black locust from my Persistence Pays Off! thread. It was a bonus tree from the score. Before i started. tree forked into two trunks about 10' up. Nice straight grain knot free primo stuff. Spied this chunk of dead fall locust close by (part of what i originally wanted from the score) and opted to buck it as well. Some decent wood from that chunk. Bucked first section and loaded, repeat for second section. 460 finished it off. Looks like the tree had already split. Halves fell apart as i bucked. Saved me from much halving with the Isocore. Something hoarding nuts in the stump Cut more deadfall on the other side of the rootball, Nearly hit a rusty wire fence, but saw it in time. One pic sideways. Nice heaping load. I think one log is just barely above the cab The Wood Wolverine. I was trying! No room for the saws! A great day cutting. One or two more trips back for the deadfall locust and some other wood. LOCUST MANIA! A real FHC disorder.
Great work Brad! Do you load most of those rounds through the rear of the truck or Are you able to get them over the sides of the bed as well?
Haven’t you noticed? Brad leads such a charmed life they split themselves. They probably load themselves too Sort of the Pied Piper of wood hoarding. Nice score there Brad. That’s a sweet straight tree. damm if your woodpile ever caught fire it’d probably melt a hole through the earth
I load both ways. Big uns go through the back. Ill load a bunch, hop in and stack, repeat. In this case each section filled about one third of this load. I was able to load some from the side. It was a bit of a schlep with the biggest ones. If its a partial load i just toss them in. My friends is three minutes away so bigger load plus wanted to get it all in one trip. I was grinning the whole time cutting and driving Jason! Although i didnt grin when i unloaded the stuff. My observation that green locust isnt as heavy as green oak, sugar maple, hickory etc Stacks 40-45, maybe 2-3 cord to buck and/or split. How about yourself? Ive seen pics of your log deck/staging area. Do you even stack since you have an OWB?
The MANIA is real. I wasn’t even looking for wood today. I was out walking through the woods with my kids looking for fishing spots and came across a small grove of Black Locust. Wouldn’t you know, someone cut one down and left it for me to take home?!?! A nice dead barkless but still solid one. So I carried the pieces up the trail, over the bank to the road where I grabbed them with my truck. Also scored 3 pallets on my way home. Not bad for a day when I wasn’t actively trying to feed my hoarding addiction.
Sounds like you have pleased the wood gods in some way, shape, or form. A lot of mine is scored that way. Are you sure you werent fishing for wood? Nice find Eric!
Haha yeah I legitimately was looking for a good pool to grab a couple rainbow trout from... that didn’t happen but I got a little Locust and the kids enjoyed being out of the house for a while. I can’t say my wife was exactly thrilled with me coming home yet again with MORE... oh well
Since I learned what black locust looks like, I've found 3 different sites in the little town where I work that has some. Still trying g to track down/talk to property owners...
What great wood! I wish we had that wood here, I don't think we do. A wiki says it can be found in all 48 states of continental USA but that is because it was artificially introduced in most. Native range is Appalachia and also some in the Ozarks.
Uh oh!!!...sounds like your coming down with locust mania! Aint it great? Thought we had it contained to Connecticut/Massachusetts. Have you traveled to the area recently? Funny you posted. That was the last time i was there. Still more BL logs. It got overgrown and the edge of the driveway had daffodils growing so i postponed til Fall. Our first good frost/freeze was the last week so its getting close! Keep us posted how you make out Jeff. If you need me to talk with the land owners let me know.
