Wow she was a big old beautiful looking tree. I wonder how many cords come out of a tree that size?

Had to be near 100 years old. Wonder why you drop it doesn't look diseased.

Dats certainly a monster. Too many branches for me LOL.

Gotta ask tho. Any reason not to cut a deeper notch? Looked like he was 1/4 at most.

FWIW I dont think I’d ever be brave enough to do a plunge cut into the notch from the front. I get enough surprises already :)

    And solid.

Good example for the use of felling wedges.

I’ve cut 100 year old oaks and nothing close to that size. Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s closer to the 150-200 year range

    I was thinking 300.
Different species but I have an old growth Chestnut mantle on my fireplace. Cut out of an old telephone pole. At 12” wide I’ve never been able to determine exact age. I lose count past 200.

I'm curious as to the reason for dropping that.. Appears to be a healthy oak with no issues.

Betting that old giant wasn't dropped for turning into firewood. Plenty of top to make firewood however! Wow. Surely it was diseased or dying.

We humans tend to like putting roads, houses, lawns, pastures, etc. in places where trees once were. That’s all the reason you need to remove a perfectly healthy tree. All of my wood comes from land clearing operations.
