Took a boat trip to moose camp

Ran the boat to moose camp.
Water was high enough, no trouble going up the small slough.
Wood stack still standing, actually pretty dry.
Bears didn't do damage, but looked like a wolverine destroyed a water jug.

Had to get a fire going & add some wet bark for smoke,
the mosquitoes were horrid.
Smoke cleared them out to bearable .
Vegetation overgrowth taking over. May be time for some roundup.

Dropped off some stuff.
Raining all day, flood warnings for 2+ inches in the Talkeetna Big Su area, so we didn't stay long.
Have several trees across trails so will head back out with a saw & stay a few days
when the weather gets better.

Now the thought of someone in Alaska having a get away camp is not an idea that would have come to me! But good for you! Hope you get to relax awhile.

 

I kinda like some vacationers coming to Maine the first time, thinking all we have here is woods full of bears and moose... keeps some of the riff raff out...

 

You mean there's other stuff up there too?

 

I like shotgun for the close bears, when you see them in the thick vegetation they will be close,
Rifles vary from medium bores 270 & up to the magnums. few of the guys carry 44 pistols
,
black bear don't alway run off like the grizzlies do, more belligerent when they get around camp .
They have to be dealt with, or they come back when you aren't there & make a mess.
The area has a predator control program in place this year, Grizzlies are on the menu.
F&G need/want to reduce the bear population some, save moose calves.
Over 90% mortality rate for moose calves in this area, mostly from Brown bears.

Salmon, yes in late July & thru August, silver salmon (coho)

No cabin, public state land , tents & tarps. Plan a 12 x20 portable carport this year
The few trails we have, have several tree down.
I'll be like Zap , get lots of fire wood clearing trails.

May take some round up out next time & do some weed control.
Plan to use/try some old carpet for my tent area, will let the water thru but keep the vegetation down.
Took some pieces out to see how it works.


Was 1st trip there this year, shake down run for the new boat & see what the bears tore up
plan on going down a few times, just a fun place to camp, fish & enjoy the quiet.

Lots of wildlife, beaver, otter in the slough , moose , birds .....

You're camping... in tents... with your kills hanging right there... and you regularly have issues with bears? OK, all my nightmare monster creatures attacking with BIG teeth images, just kicked in... You the man Dave! ...

I'd have to sleep with a 50 cal machine gun wearing night vision goggles... and never close my eyes...

One thing for sure, you never will never get a job at Maine's Tourism Bureau or welcome centers.... Just saying...

I was think thinking the same thing.. Dave you are the man! I would need a hefty log cabin around me on that spot, gun or no gun.

 

Yeah, I'm thinkin the tourism office prolly wouldn't like my "Welcome to Maine" PR ideas much...

Yup, BIG logs in the log cabin keepin me from hungry bears... I worry like an old lady at the cabin, putting any and all foods in the truck every night. We do have black bears around, but mostly coyotes, coons and ....ugh... porcupines...

 

"You like mean bears? No....? mhhmm..." How about big skeeters?" "Blackflies....?" "What's wrong with you people..?" "Pickup load full of firewood, come on in, go around these other idiots..."

 

Although it is public land, do you have a lease on or some other exclusive rights? What keeps someone else from squatting on your site?

 

Well I'm not going to work so hard, to get a moose hanging, & let a bear take it. (without a fight anyway)
Don't walk thru my camp, at night , when meats hanging, & "" not have a headlamp/flashlight on "" ! ! ( It's silhouette shooting time )
More possessive of my moose than my firewood
& I'm pretty possessive of my firewood.

Hanging meat don't give off much odor.
The strong odor is at the gut pile (kill site) . Bears show up there first.
So we work it until the 4 quarters & back straps are in camp , then
take a break. If at night, we go back in daylight for the rest, prepared for a bear to be there.
Usually takes a few days for one to find it, but sometimes if one is close, they are there quick.

Guess I've been lucky so far
Not often have bear issues here, they are pretty smart , humans mean trouble to them.
Typically they stay away.
