Cant believe what ive gone through to procure this score. Been driving by a bunch of log sections while en route to my friends where i store wood. Victims of the May 2018 tornado here. Tree sections bucked and tossed into the woods. Ive stopped and considered taking a couple logs as some are next to the road, but its on a blind and dangerous "S" curve. There is more wood in the wooded area between the road and driveway which goes diagonal uphill from the road and had thought of parking there and taking the wood. Couple months ago i see a car in the driveway so i stop and ask. She sends me to the last house all the way up. (very long common driveway shared by 4-5 residences.) The elderly gentleman gives me a phone number of the neighbor who takes care of the right of way. Been too busy to work the score and call. Last month i go by and see another car. Stopped and ask lady. Newer resident doesnt know the neighbor, just that he seems nice and waves. Finally called couple weeks ago. No answer and repeatedly tried calling with the same result. Oh, and i forgot to mention...the wood is BLACK LOCUST otherwise i wouldnt want it. Drove to his house and knocked on the door last week. I was on a wood hoarding mission! No answer. On the verge of giving up, but hey this is locust!. Im going by there today and a guy raking by the driveway. Another neighbor who sends me up to his house and bingo. Hes in the yard cleaning up twigs and i get the go ahead...park, cut and take all i want at my convenience. FINALLY! Gets even better...the storm here yesterday took down another locust that partly blocked the driveway. First group of pics is tree that just came down. Neighbor bucked some logs. I cut a few more. found out first hand it has thorns on the limbs. Minimal experience cutting fresh locust 18" DBH Following pics are some of the old logs. This is one of the upcoming locations for my LOCUST Quest! thread. Gonna have to work it (prickers, overgrowth, hill), but has to be a good truck full of wood laying around. Persistence paid off and victory is sweet. The life of a wood hoarder! Will update threads as i work this!

Good score buZZsaw BRAD . I'm splitting some BL myself. Unfortunately I didn't buck it and it's all different lengths 15-24". So I'm cutting the longer stuff down. By the way, seeing pics of your stacks is why I won't post pics of mine.
Thanks for the compliment. The neighbor who bucked the logs that went across the driveway got the lengths pretty good....14-16" with 16" being my standard length. I love having full trees/trunks to buck to my specs. Tree service wood makes me crazy!
Way to go!! One thing, take the time, look the locus over really well. Those thorns hurt, TRUST ME on this, and they go in deep. I"m guessing you've already found this out. I cut a lot of locus when i lived in the eastern part of the state. And, it never changed, those thorns no matter when, you cut the wood, they ALWAYS HURT when they stick you!! You can't buy a pair of gloves that will protect you, they'll go right though heavy leather gloves. So, just take the time, look it over, and make it count.
Thanks for the warning. Luckily all the limbs landed on the driveway and the neighbor had cleared it. Few stragglers though.
When the truck is loaded, go in with your cant hook and tow strap, roll log into loop of tow strap, hook other end on hitch of truck and pull it out of that mess into a clearer area. Trucks with weight pull better than empty trucks. Also gets it closer to your truck and helps with loading! Good job!
Amazing. It shows that persistence can indeed pay. However, when I look at the thorns, I wonder if I'd be that anxious to get locust.
I have a situation like that where the county came through and extensively cut back the right of way on a road near my house for a couple miles. Huge pile of white oak logs! The property is owned by a guy who lives about 20 miles from the property. I need to drive over to his house and see if he even knows about or if he has plans for it. I assume this is his hunting property. Need to just do it. Thanks for the motivation Hate to put it off and lose it, but I’m kinda drowning in wood right now and have a ton to split and stack.
I do this all the time. Very helpful. If you get even a partial load in the truck for weight it s surprising what you can pull out.
My first living full sized tree that ive scored/ to be cut. Ive seen the thorns on saplings/suckers, but didnt know they were in the upper branches as well.
