Some fierce wind and rain yesterday from the storm here. We lost power for about 1.5hrs. late yesterday afternoon. On my way home yesterday i spy a tree snapped off and resting on wires. Some flashing lights from cop cars and a utility truck ready to take it down during the storm. I got dibs on the wood this morning. Sugar maple. Two driveways up from me. Not much but every bit counts. 20 minutes to get them off the slope and buck roadside. I was surprised they left this up there. Im assuming its coming down soon. Hopefully ill get it too! This dead chestnut oak (12"dbh) snapped off at ground level and hung up. Right in our driveway. Asked the landlord and he said no. "It is safe where it is" was his reply. Been wanting to cut it down for a couple years.
A loose bottom leaner SAFE??? Yikes!!! I guess he doesn't have to drive under it every day. Tie that bad boy to the bumper and yank it out of the sky...
Would be a lot safer CSS at the house wouldn’t it Brad? I personally wouldn’t want the liability as a landlord. You watch, you’ll probably wake up tomorrow to the landlord and his chainsaw! Oh well, I guess it’s his perogative as the landowner, but I’d love a tenant willing to take down a leaner for free.
I have a pitch pine on the telephone wires by my mailbox. When the power company ( or their contractor) was out trimming from around the high voltage wires they didn't touch it as it wasn't a threat to the power wires. When no one was looking I'd pull the bottom of that chestnut oak out with the truck as it is actually/possibly a life-threatening safety hazard. It's only "safe" as no one happens to be walking under it when/if the wind just happened to come from the right direction. Would a wise observant person walk under it ? Probably not, but not everyone is wise and observant.
That one hanging on the wire gives new meaning to BUZZsaw.... Great score Sir! That wind and rain Monday was fierce. We had almost 3" of rain in 12 hours. I'm happy more trees didn't come down with the saturated soil and wind.
We got maybe 4" here for the whole event. Anything in Wallingford near you come down Skier76 ? I have a friend who works for the Wlfd electric division...he's a lineman. Asked him if any wood down. Only some pine for his crew.
Not a chance in a million years. Hes this cantankerous old guy who you cant tell or teach anything. He just was burning some 6-8 month seasoned red oak! He all politics, tell you what you wanna hear. Honestly we cant stand the guy, but we live 1/4 mile off the road in a beautiful wooded lot and am content here. River in the ravine, wildlife and birds...nice trail going into the woods. Very peaceful and serene. Doesnt get much better IMO!
I left this afternoon and there is a cable co truck ready to take the rest down. Came back later, grabbed the saw and took it. They mustve just lifted it off the wires and let it fall and left the spar as is. A bit gnarly but hey its sugar maple not much good wood holding it on. No wonder it snapped off.
