With this lockdown that we are all (mostly) under, is anyone else getting projects done that you may have been putting off for awhile? So far I have replaced a bunch of wiring that I deemed questionable, changed electrical outlets, added more outlets so I don't have extension cords running across the basement. Cleaned up leaves left over from last fall. And my oldest boy has already gotten the mower out and fired it up. And finally installed a brand new sump pump. Had to rent a jackhammer this afternoon to get it all done today.
Always something to do.... I am working on getting the garden ready. Building beds this year....make it a little more manageable. Of course pics won't load...But anyway I have basically a 20'x30' raised bed. It got a bit out of hand and I got discouraged after a groundhog got in and ate everything but the tomato plants. I figure if I build individual beds, I can manage it better. As for one of the groundhogs, he was met his maker. Then there is of course firewood. As the wife says, always with the firewood... And cannot forget about the honey do list, that never gets any shorter.
My wife has a million projects, but good things take time. I am getting outside on nice days and processing wood, but at a reasonable rate. E always are running so I was rushing everything. Not now
Thankfully I finished my wood right around when this all got really big. I’m at around 18 full cords put up in stacks right now. Since then I‘ve cleaned out old flower beds, raked the lawn, expanded some woods trails, organized the basement, turned an old closet into a pantry, did some tractor work, etc. Trying not to spend much money in case things get worse. Plenty of low dollar projects I can do or things to fix/maintain.
Among other things, rebuilding the water take out for my lower garden and raspberry patch. The continuing journey of touching everything in and around this house since I came back home. Some times hard to remove my Dad's work. Time rolls on. I think he would be pleased w/what I have done. The old. The new.
Sadly not much going on here. I've been laid up for way too long. Was supposed to have some much needed surgery on my neck, which is really in bad need of it but first we had some problems with doctors not getting things coordinated and labs screwing up then a vacation by the surgeon and now the virus. Not sure when it will get done and it is sad that I can't do much while waiting but just have to suck it up for now. I did manage to stack a cord of wood but it took me 8 days to complete the task as I can't do much at one time. It just really does bad things to the neck so all I can do is a few minutes at a time or a few minutes per day. Sorry, maybe I should not have posted all that but I couldn't post much else other than one job I do is to get on my wife's nerves.
2 new garden beds going in here today. New kinds of plants we've been thinking about growing are either getting started or seeds going in. Beets, carrots, more tomatoes and more and different pepper plants already up. Miss July has already cleaned and reorganized the entire first floor of the house, including pantry and drawers and closets.
I am still up and at work before sunlight every morning, cows wouldn't be happy if they didn't get there food in the morning. If it would every stop raining it will start being our busy time of the year getting everything ready for working up the fields and planting. And at home I have a never ending always growing list. I have so many projects I need to get done it's not even funny.
If it wasn't so rainy and wet I'd be getting more done outside. Back being a little tender right now isn't helping either. My sister runs a greenhouse operation and she's planning for a banner year. Other years they've cut back on their inventories. It's not surprising Lowes and HD are doing well with everyone home and having time to accomplish home and yard improvements.
We'll, today's project involved life extension. Two small wear holes taken cared of. I suspect there will be others. But, I'm ready,!!
My wife's uncle has been having problems with his sciatica. Had surgery lined up for back in mid-March. It was considered to be elective and the surgery was put off. So like others, he deals with the pain and discomfort.
What am I working on? My second beer Got the yard mowed and peas put in the garden this past week. Other than that just playing around the wood pile and doing some cooking. I have been doing some cleaning of the workshop but I hate cleaning and re-organizing. Finding every excuse to not do it. Not going very fast.
Hope this all is over sooner than later so you can get back on the surgery schedule. Glad your able to at least do what you have been. Sometimes it’s nice to just be able to go outside, and then there’s the full time job of the wife’s nerves. I always try and put in at least an hour of that myself every day
We’ve been doing some stuff in the yard: cleaning all the leaves out of the flower beds and burning them, got the garden cleaned up from last year, burned an area behind the house about 25 ft deep and 300 foot long to give the yard a nice lean edge to mow against, and then there’s usually some firewood most days. Then, with school being cancelled and the stay at home order, the kids require quite a bit of attention (especially the 5 yr old!), but it’s been a lot of fun too. Took the deck off the mower and have had the 7yr old tooling around the yard nonstop for the past few days. Really burnin through the gas! We caught some bass the other day, and my boy got a pretty nice one. It was a lot of fun! I’m always hesitant to do much outside stuff this time of year, cause I always say to my wife that more often than not, I end up hunting turkeys in the snow in late April. Seems more and more like that’s not a legitimate excuse though Weather just doesn’t seem to hang on like it used to.
Sorry you are laid up right now, my brother. Hopefully all this covid crap goes back to normal soon, and you can get your neck fixed. Wish I was near you to help ya out.
Last weekend we did cutting and splitting. That added to the pile of wood that my boy split. We have more Ash to cut and split than we have time. This weekend we will split some more, stack some and hopefully get the shed moved.
