Found this while splitting the ash i cut yesterday. Was wondering if it was my cut that came that close and it was. (wood was cut in sections by tree service left roadside) Couple nails in this log and i missed one by less than an inch. It was a new chain on the 028 too. The wood gods were on my side this time! I wasnt trying to beat Horkn at who can come closer to the metal without cutting it. Bottom section of a log from a tree on the edge of a yard!
Close call! I've had one. Grazed it a tad. Chain still cut. It's the barbed wire that will absolutely kill a chain, as does screws. I've heard of guys milling through nails.
I’ve found those damm nails in trees that are literally in the middle of the forest. It’s gotta be Tommy Knockers or something that puts them there.
Days before fabricated tree stands. Nail on steps and build a deck in a crotch. Plenty of nails (no cordless drills for screws) in those middle of the woods trees.
I’ve never thought of that. Hunting is huge here. We basically have every type of big game here. Very good point!
I forgot to add that that was just my guess. I built many tree stands on my parent's farm in the woods and tree lines. Amazing how the fabricated stands took over (safety reasons and who would have thought of a buddy stand?) When I read your post it just hit me that I was guilty of maiming many trees in my youth and ignorance.
If it makes you feel any better - the sky scraping ponderosas and Douglas firs here just eat those nails up. Doesn’t seem to slow them down.
Nails are one thing, some old stands they used cotton picker spindles for climbing spikes. They look like chrome steel, really hard. Some of the oak we are CSS now has clothesline and nails in it. Haven't hit it YET...
You should be ashamed of yourself! Now go cut them all down and add to your hoard so that nobody else has to find your nails
JWinIndiana, When I read your post earlier, it reminded me of this tree on the neighbors, so when I had a couple free hours to run out and cut, I snapped a quick pic. Platform in a crotch.....nails for steps.....To a tee! You’d have to be pretty intoxicated for these nails to get you now, but there’ll come a day when someone is cutting into it and cursing whoever put them in there 50 years agoi can’t bring myself to cut the tree down or even remove the “steps” It’s one of those things that you notice every time you walk or drive by it that reminds you of the generations gone by and what they must have been doing back there. My son and I found an old diet verniers bottle on the edge of the woods a couple weeks ago in really good shape for its age, and I told him it very well may have been from someone doing just what we were doing 30 or 40 years ago.
Haftacut, if there were a 5 strand barb wire fence between that cornfield and woods, that would be one of the many stands I had on our farm. Boy does that bring back memories!!! Those double nails held a 2x4 for steps. Thanks for the picture, brings back good memories!
Growing up and learning to hunt, hang on tree stands were for the rich folks. We had those homemade perches everywhere. I agree! Good memories
