Another what is it?

I know I need to get better at tree id. But what kind of wood is this?

 

Looks to be some sort of maple possibly? Any leaves, even dried up ones?

 

No leaveas. I was thinking a maple myself but grain seemed too dark. I guess I just got use to silver maple and forgot about the other maples

 

Looks like a maple. Look at the branches for a positive ID . Twigs on the ends that are opposite are maples or ash . If the twigs are staggered then it’s not one of those 2.

sugar maple. High ridges on bark in older trees. Great firewood. High btu's, seasons in a year, great coals.

 

Maple yes but if its silver or red maple I don't want it. I really don't have room for anymore firewood. If its sugar maple I'll make room.

 

I can’t say for sure it’s a sugar maple and I tap 1200 of them every year . Did it have buds opening up already ? Red flowers ? Do you know when the seeds dropped ?

 

It is sugar. Go for it. Here are some pics of my recent Last 6-8 months sugar scores.

 

Good point on the red buds. The red maples around Southern CT have had buds for maybe two weeks now.

Unfortunately its an add for free wood near me. From the way the add is weitten I think I know more about the tree than the owner

 

Ordinarily I'd take the red maple but with the limited room I have right now I'm sticking to what are the easiest to sell around here...apple, cherry and sugar maple. Oak is an easy sell but it takes too long to season. Maybe if I can clear some room out
