Whiskey like smell would be in the white oak family.. maybe chestnut oak? I can’t quite tell from the split picture of it has the telltale oak rays in the grain of the wood.
Doesn’t look like any red oak I’ve processed. And I do get that whiskey type smell from red and white oaks. I’m going to guess rock oak. Any ideas farmer steve ?
I was thinking honey locust but I never remember getting my hands on any of it before. I process 100 plus cords of oak most years and I’m almost positive it’s not an oak- or at least any kind of oak I’ve dealt with before.
You have, or at least, what looks like, a couple of limbs so the bark won't look the same as the trunk. However I can't see any of the rays that show when oak is cut. The split sure looks like the 3/4 cord of red oak I split today. Okay I think I'm stumped, so to speak!
Looks like hickory from the bark. I'm thinking shagbark limbs Might be heavy from laying on the ground. A little punk on the one side.
