Things have reached a new level of hysteria. Our local University where my wife works, URI has suspended classes and will be finishing out with online classes. The University of Maine is following the same path.

    • NBA has suspended the season after one player has tested positive.
    • NCAA president Mark Emmert has announced that all Division I men's and women's basketball tournament games will be played in arenas without fans. According to Emmert's statement, only "essential staff and limited family" will be allowed to attend.
    • Concert shows have been canceled.
    • Major movie productions have been postponed due to conflicts:
      • USA TODAY confirmed a Deadline story on March 10 that Disney had shut down production of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" in Prague after the Czech Republic city closed schools and instituted restrictions on events and travel. According to Deadline, the Disney+ series from Marvel, which mostly shoots in Atlanta, was filming in Prague for about a week.
Coronavirus cancellations: Adam Sandler, 'Survivor,' Jon Stewart

My wife and I talked today about how the masses look at preppers. I pointed out that preppers are in a perfect position if this breaks out like they are predicting.

Are they not telling us more than what they know?

Or is this purely more hysteria like the previous hysteria based accounts like:
    • Zika Virus (2016)
    • Swine Flu (2009)
    • Avian Flu/Bird Flu(2005)
    • SARS(2003)

Both Harvard and Yale ECAC Division 1 hockey teams dropped out after winning their first round playoff games, the ECAC still plans on playing the championship games with four teams in Lake Placid NY but I'm thinking that will change.

We had tickets this weekend for both games between Clarkson and Colgate but decided earlier tonight that we wouldn't go and then we received an email explaining the above around 9:30 tonight.

Me thinks this hysteria is different. Perhaps it's just a different level of hyped up hysteria? Meeting called at work today, was pretty much said that most folks can telework if possible, people dont have to come in etc. They're still trying to figure things out. There are those of us who can't telework due to our positions, will be interesting to see how this morphs. With all the other "events" of the past, it hasn't hit this level at work.

I've been working from home for 9 months for my dad. As I'm about to start heading back to the office, my boss told me today that they are working on improving our VPN in order for non-essential personal to work from home. I do not need to be in the office. For the foreseeable future, I'll continue to work from home.

The social implications of the virus are far worse than the actual virus. Seasonal influenza kills 1 in 1000-1300 people it infects. Corona kills about 3 in 100 and hospitalizes about 20 out of every 100 infected. Flu season is November through April, there is some expectations this will fade out as weather and humidity levels increase. If so this will fade to memory just like SARS, Ebola and many others. But it can continue to spread and turn really ugly really fast!

The following is MY interpretation. IF you don’t have copd, diabetes, don’t smoke and don’t have heart failure. You’ll be miserable for 3-5 days then a week or so of recovery and back to normal. 1:500’ish chance of death.

Now if you have COPD and diabetes and heart failure (only alive because of modern medicine) your going to the ICU! And about 1 in 10 (or worse) chance of death.

It’s different in the fact it’s spread everywhere, appears to be highly contagious and is overwhelming health care systems in the countries it’s got a good hold on.

Trying to isolate us is how they’re *trying* to slow the spread and allow our healthcare system thats running at or near capacity to begin with a chance to keep up.

Buckle up, we could be in for a bumpy ride.

Midwinter posted something like this previously in another thread. Totally agree. Guess I am a visual person, it was more clear to me than words if this helps others like me.

Let's not forget the Surgeon General's plea to STOP buying masks.

It seems the data to figure covid-19 mortality is real iffy. Even if you take the Chinese government's number at face value, they have important variables in play like high rates of smoking and air pollution. In the U.S., we can't pin down a mortality rate because we don't really know how many people have had it.
I read that South Korea is claiming a mortality rate over 4% for people in their 70s and over 7% for people over 80 years old. China is claiming rates twice as high for those age ggroups.
What is clear is that elderly people and people with other health issues are at a much higher risk if they get it. Screenshot_20200311-233302_Samsung Internet.jpg Screenshot_20200311-233600_Samsung Internet.jpg

I found this video on the Corona-virus and found it to be quite sane and not fear mongering. Some useful and practical ideas as well.

This Covid 19 thing reminds me of that old joke about the body parts arguing who was the most important part of the human body function. The rest of them all laughed when the "A" hole said he was the most important part. 3 days after he shut down, they soon realized he just wasn't whistlin' Dixie. I am starting to consider Covid 19 to be playing that part...............................

It's ignorant to dismiss this virus and even more so to compare it to the flu or past viral outbreak events. This hasn't even begun to play out yet in the united states. When it's all over we can make comparisons. Until then it's all up in the air.

People making predictions based off of Chinese information? Come on people. That's a communist country. If they said it killed 3% of people that probably means it killed at least twice that. You can't trust any info from China.
