So, I've mentioned our place and it's perplexing history a few times here.

Well, got a new level of interesting going on now.

So, I was working on a stump with the backhoe on Sunday..
    20200311_175656.jpg

    Didn't get it out yet.
But during this and other cleanup I was going over one of the many soft spots here.

    No biggie.

Out with Holly today and notice a hole.
    ? ? ?
Opened it up some with my hands.

    20200311_174806.jpg

    20200311_174840_HDR.jpg

And see rotted wood in the hole.

    20200311_174812.jpg

    What the?????

So, more investigation reveals railroad ties.
    o_O

They not sposed to be there.
    :picard:

Grabbed the shovel, and the adventure begins.

    20200311_181405.jpg

I count 3 old RR ties so far, and have absolutely zero clue as to what may be underneath them.

I told Chazsbetterhalf that there must be a treasure down there.
    :startled:

Or.. It could be another money/time pit.

    Across the street.

I've thought it may cover an old well, hopefully not septic.

    Not a good one.

I used to have a nice White's back in high school.

If I had it now I'm not sure if I'd be surprised or shocked at what I'd find here

Not much seems beyond the pale.

Oh no, this is the side yard near the house.

Was never "supposed" to be any rail lines across the property.

Found one of those treasures last May. I was having a concrete patio poured. I tore out an old deck and while cleaning that up getting some roots out of the way, I felt myself starting to sink. Started digging and found the original well pit from the mid 50s. The pit itself was all concrete block. The ‘cover’ was some rebar with wood boards on top, all wrapped in plastic (to apparently discourage the boards from rotting), then covered with dirt.

The deep well was drilled in 1983, so I’m guessing it had been that way for 35-36 years. In there was also all the electrical splices for a bunch of outdoor lights that I ripped out. That explains where all the wires that were stapled to the trees eventually ended up. :headbang:

Its hard to see the layout of the timbers (ties) but maybe.... just maybe, its an abandoned dry well?

    Quite possibly.

I have a hard time imagining anything else, but who knows.

I'll be exploring this weekend I suppose.

Maybe you will find the rails that go with those ties. Doesn't someone on this site use rails to stack wood on?:zip::yes:

I hope it turns out to be a minor issue. Maybe part of an old retaining wall or planting bed.

We have a little mystery here in the original 1875 portion of the basement. I started to dig it down for a little more heads space and hit a finished brick wall in an "L" shape. The top course is clean with no mortar on top of the bricks. My thought was part of a root cellar or well pit I do have a metal detector and found all sorts of trinkets while digging. I have a sifter too, but haven't used it there yet.

I expect to find an old privy or bottle dump out back here. There is lots of metal in the ground from the old farm.
