Got told today that a tree hit by lightning and standing dead wont burn. Any truth to this?

Best kindling I've seen was cut from the bottom 6' of a pine hit by lightening. Old timers called it lighter knot and you barely had to put a flame to it to get it lit. Something about all of the sap getting cooked and pushed toward the root ball.

Im unable to quote posts for some reason.

The best kindling ive found is what we call "woof wood". Its the shavings/saw dust from your chainsaw mixed with a bit of diesel.

I agree with some of the others, Yep...they do burn. Seen some nasty low temp burn marks on the forks of a few trees while backpacking in NH and VT.

Are you using the "Reply" button?

I've never seen lightning strike a dead tree but suppose it could happen.

He was talking about one that has been struck but didn't ignite. Plenty of fires get started here from lightning in the bush. As far as alcohol was concerned you could say this bloke is quite partial to some good ale :)

Give it a drink. It works for some people so may work for the computer. If not, just drink it yourself.

I had a big Sycamore hit by lightening in my yard years ago. It made 2 cords and burned fine after CSS for 2 years.

Somebody once told me that a lightning struck tree would burn, but it wouldn't put out any heat. That person had some "issues" though.

For sure but that transformer is pretty hot even before getting hit! I recall a few years back when a lightning strike blew out a transformer on our place. They came out and the guy about crapped when we went up top. Said the thing had no lid. Me and one of the crew started looking for it. We found it but it was a long, long ways from the pole. No track where it may have rolled either. Must have been airborne a bit before coming down. Glad it didn't land on the house. Those buggers are heavy cast.

I saw a tall hemlock that had been struck by lightning...it ended up with a zipper from the top to the bttom that looked like a 4"x4" had been removed from it, only thing was that it spiraled from top to bottom just like a barber pole.
Also have found trees still on fire from lightning strikes. Never heard that they wouldn't burn, though.

I've been within 50 yards of a lightning strike 3 times and I'll probably vividly remember them forever. I don't see how people can get struck and live.
