A footer and 5 coarses of block should be plenty deep.

4 course of block 32" 1 solid cap 4" footer 8" 44" to bottom of footer. Good.
but the side with the mud box can not be more than 16" deep, I am curious as to if they are going to add fill.
If they are not the footer should of been stepped down with 2 #8 rebar tying it together. I am not there so I am making ASSumptions based on pics.
Just food for thought and to maybe ask the right questions of the contractor.

Updates: They finished the blocks yesterday and poured the slab today. Just a little finish work on the concrete.

Do you have an estimated move in date? Is he coming from his home, or from therapy? Can be quite a transition. Looking good.

The place should be ready before the end of April, but that is dependent on the weather which is unpredictable. FIL is living on his own across town right now with some in-home aids for ADL's and wife visits with him 1-2/day. This way, he should be able to move-in whenever he wants, probably over a period of time. He doesn't have a drop dead move date.

mike bayerl Just a quick comment of saying good on you for having the ability and desire to do this instead of just putting them in a nursing home:tip:

Here's a couple picts of the finished slab. There will be an 8'x20' patio poured in the yellow marked area later.

The swimming pool is finished now. Actually, the builder was here this morning backfilling and putting some stones down where the cement patio will go. Then the rain came in again. Moving right along. Weather permitting we should have a roof and walls in ~2 weeks.

What always amazes me is how the space designated for the building project seems to change dimensions. When you pour the slab, it seems endlessly big. You start the walls and the space shrinks. Get the windows and doors in, it looks big again. After the drywall is on, you get a better sense of the final area. Carpeting or flooring seems to increase the size again until the furniture gets put in.

Thanks again for posting pictures of the progress.

    Bless you mike bayerl

So many seem to forget that our parents raised and cared for us for nearly 2 decades (some longer) but can't repay that to their elders.

Although it caused some conflict when my parents moved in with us. We'd do it all over again.
    :)
