There’s been a small crew felling trees just up the road from us since Saturday, including today in winds up to 50 mph. They’re working with junk equipment to boot. Yesterday I watched one climber cutting a 16” trunk section off with a small limbing saw that was so dull I started to wonder if it had a chain on it! It took forever. I can’t bring myself to watch them today. Seems like something is bound to go wrong. I’ve never seen anyone felling trees in conditions like this. Does this seem out of the ordinary to anyone else, or is it just me?
If there is nothing to hit, I’d be comfortable felling as long as the natural lean matched the wind direction. Probably an increased possibility of barber chair... but you could get that with a big lean and snow in the crown. Not so sure I’d be comfortable climbing though...
I was out back today Maina just watching the wind show ... unreal. Wind "waves" would slam into the entire wall of oaks, ash and maples along our back lawn. Laid em right ovah. I wouldn't even walk down in our woods, much less drop trees, in winds like this...
We had gusts of 40 mph, and I passed an Asplundh crew, trimming a big oak from a bucket. It must be hard to do with the branches waving around.
A shocking number of people work paycheck to paycheck. Maybe some day rich people will pay us all to sit home and do nothing but consume. [/sarcasm]
I wouldnt do it, unless the wind is blowing in the direction i want the tree to fall. Maybe they thought it'd be a breeze to do!
It was a little breezy today. No where near 50. Cutting some Trees of Heaven with little canopy branches I noticed they werent falling like normal. Ended up making a normal cut, back off and wait for the breeze to let go. Sort of fun.
If the tree wants to fall in the same direction as the wind, it usually is okay to fell some trees, at least the ones in the woods. We used to do it when I was logging but I never liked it.
