yup thats sassafras. Its lower on the btu scale. Good SS wood. Spits like crazy. Burn away!
Love the smell of it...one of my favorites.
Not listed on the FHC btu chart though.

The sweetest smelling wood there is. I have to cut one once in a while just to smell that sweet aroma.

Notice that very few sassafras will grow straight. Also keep watch in the spring as they have leaf that is beautiful not only after it forms but especially as is it just breaking out of the bud stage.

The roots and sometimes the bark smell like root beer. At one time used to flavor carbonated sugared water now used to make MDMA.

Yep, sassafras, unforgettable smell. Ol timers used it as a tonic. Made a tea by boiling the roots.

Interesting. I’d love to smell the smell. Never had any sassafras.

When I was 15 i went on a backpacking trip through the Green Mountains. The guides made tea out of the green new growth branch tips. Wasn’t bad. Course after you’ve been hiking through the mountains for a few days anything tastes good :)

Haha, deal! I unknowingly had a couple 12/15" rounds of BW laying around when I was on my Swedish torch kick and they got the treatment. Now I'm excited to see the color show when I burn them. Next time you're in the area stop by and I'll throw a couple in your truck.
