So I had a faux pas today while cutting the apple wood. One of the twisted branches I cut off fell against the saw after hitting the ground. At that point the chain wouldn't move so I took the bar nuts off to check it out. After messing with it for a few minutes I finally figured out it was the CHAIN BRAKE (doh!) was pushed to the lock position! Unfortunately I forgot to tighten the nuts back up before I resumed cutting. The saw didn't sound right so I looked down and noticed the nuts missing. I looked for them for a little while but no luck. I called the nearest Tractor Supply and they only had Husqvarna brand so I bought a package of 4 for $6.99 and luckily they worked!! Lesson learned the hard way. I'm going to try and get back to the orchard for another load when we get another nice day in the next week. sslw
Very common to lose your nuts. Try painting your nuts bright orange or some other color. You'll be glad you did.
So maybe I should paint them fluorescent orange as cnice_37 suggested then my wife could find them even in the dark?!
I dropped one in the winter about 5 or 6 years ago and couldn't find it so I put the extra one on I had but that spring I went back to the cherry where I lost it with a magnetic puck, I picked it up on my last try.
A good strong magnet should be able to find them, if you have one along next time. If there is a next time. Welcome to FHC btw. I missed your intro thread somewhere.
I have a rolling magnet that I bought around 16-17 years ago for roofing jobs to pick up nails. Works great for finding any dropped metal objects. Mines about 3’ wide, but places like Home Depot and even Harbor Freight sell similar slightly smaller ones and they’re not super expensive. $30-$40.
My tools are painted blue, when the leaves drop in the fall the ground can be orange. I have yet to see a blue leaf.
Get a Stihl, their nuts are attached ( rude comments welcome ). As for color (colour CA. )..... In fact Fife is right on, only blueberries are the only blue in nature. We use blue survey tape .
