My neighbor need these two dead ash trees dropped and I’ll get the wood and probably help cleanup too. He’s a good friend and has had a tough go of it but has turned his life around the last few years.

Anyways, I don’t like that they’re dead, with limbs on the side they can’t go. I’ll probably use some rope and my truck to help encourage them to go the correct direction. I prefer to just cut a deep knotch, and use wedges so this will be a first with my truck. I guess I have used a rope and come a long

The good part is I can see them from my breakfast nook

Can you remove some of the branches on the side you dont want it fall, cut part way through and pull it down with the truck.

That’s my plan. But trying to save him $$ and not rent a lift. The one closer to me in the picture looks like it’ll go as planned in one drop, the other I’ll definitely need to do a little carving before dropping it.
The back story is there was a third one there and it blew over into the attached garage a couple months before they bought the house two years back. They need to go away. He worked for the local rural electric company and should have gotten them down then as he could borrow a truck for a couple hours for cheap, but he just switched jobs again. I know better than to chance it if I’m not sure they’ll go where planned. But there’s always risk.

    Thanks

I have a couple to take down in a tricky area, thinking about renting a lift but dont really want to, maybe share the cost with someone who could use it also.

I just ran down to my local steel dealer that also is a rental shop and is where I rented a trailer boom lift from. They’ll work with the homeowner on the cost of the lift since we won’t need it for more than an hour but I grabbed a nice big pole saw to see if that’s enough or not.

Well, it’s all on the ground at least. Was more dead and brutal than I thought so glad I grabbed a Lyft and worked my way down

A few extra $'s to be safe, is a good thing.

Yup. Helping neighbor so he paid for the lift. I have a great business relationship with that shop so am confident they’ll split their normal fee. Only had it for 64 minutes. From hookup to unhooking it back in their yard, on a Sunday. Got everything all bucked to length and both stumps cut flush for grinding. Will finish cleaning up this week. Owner was very happy, and actually paid me $400 even though I tried to decline. That’ll help with tires for our camper so I can maybe pull it to backwoods place come May.
Money is nice, but helping a friend is all I need. God is good and supplies more than I need. Its a joy to be physically able to serve as He calls.

I don't do tricky close to buildings I leave that kind of tricky to the pro's. Harry Callahan said it best: "A man's got to know his limitations."

Tricky in the woods, that's a different matter, that's fun!

Nice work! Glad all went well and you are safe. Always a little adrenaline rush felling a tree. Have you ever worked from a lift with a saw? I have a couple jobs to price out using a lift.

This is the second time I’ve got a lift for the sole purpose of taking down a tree. From all my commercial construction time, I’m used to working From them, but running a saw from one is a different beast imo. I was right next door, but still decided to not walk back over and grab the little 180 so ran the ported 362 from the basket. It can be a handful working around the railing. I sure like the power though. If this becomes the norm, I’ll definitely be seeking a good top handle saw. The lift is a whole 4 blocks away so that makes it easy. And it’s a small local mom/pop shop that so a actually owned and run by a good sized farm owner. He wanted to keep the shop going as a service to the community and a way to allow the farm and this business to feed another family. He’s great to work with and it helps that I buy a new $15K EXMark mower every three years for work. They also are a dealer for green mountain grills and I’ve got two and help sell them I think.

Nice job! Soon we'll have you working with Barcroftb and Scotty Overkill and blacksmith. Hum, we might all be in the same place in about 2 months from now. Hint, hint.

One more day after work I hope will have it cleaned up. Should be about a cord n a half of decent wood. Enjoying straight grained easy splitting ash for once. Don’t think that I’ll need the hydro for more than a couple chunks.
Feels gooder swinging the fiskars team rather than pulling a lever.

That's about as hollow as I've ever seen ash.
