I'm setting up my 5 ton electric log splitter with a one handed operation mod, I'm wondering if the electrical button should activate first or the hydraulics first? I'm thinking the pump should get up to speed before the hydraulics but the manual says it's the other way around. Powerfist5ton22a.jpg

I'm not sure about your particular splitter but the instructions might be too keep the pump from dead heading (which can destroy a pump). It depends on the plumbing of the valve.

Thanks jmb6420, hopefully I never run into that situation, I was concerned about damage that might occur if the pump was started first but so far it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Just as a precaution if you own a Powerfist 5 ton wood splitter, after removing the return spring covers I discovered the allan bolts on the spring retainers were all loose. these will most definitely loosen further while operating the splitter to the point of failing and give you a pretty nasty surprise if not an injury, keep these things tight !

On my electric splitter the pump runs all the time...then it has 2 levers to engage the ram...but my hands are big enough to grab them both with one hand. Different brand I'd say...mine is red...looks just like most of them I see...no name on it anymore though.
    Nice mod on yours there!

Thanks, some people seem to prefer the motor running full time I've read that the start/stop routine can harm the motor, not sure if that's true for all machines, hopefully not for mine anyway.

It certainly doesn't do it any favors...I work at a plant that has lots of motors that run almost 24/7...a 40 year old motor is not uncommon...
