Put in a few hours today in the woodlot down the street. Taking advantage of the last cold day for awhile. Geting muddy. Hickory and cherry mostly with a few buckthorn and oak for good measure. Split about half the pile.
Nice work. I enjoyed the cold here today as well. Im not familiar with buckthorn, is that its actual name?
The only buckthorn I know of is a invasive brush that takes over and has big thorns that stab you. I have burnt mostsome but I deal with are under 5" dia
Yes. Invasive small tree brought here from Europe ages ago. It was brought here as an ornamental and did nto stay in the yards. It overtakes woodlots, prairies, wetlands, real menace tree in the midwest. It grows so numerously and so thickly nothing will grow beneath it. I am not sure if it is in CT as a problem plant. It is pretty hard and seems rot resistant. It is usually not big and mostly no more than a single split is required. A bit of work, but I cut it and treat the stumps to help out the woodlands.
Yep, that one. it grows to small tree size here sometimes and you can cut baseball bat size trees all day. Menace tree.
I cut a lot of it when I'm out cutting on my parents property. You can clear a area around your deer stand and by next year you are cutting it back out again. We have a lot of it around here.
that is huge for a buckthorn. At least if they were like that they would be worth dealing with and not just a pita
