I’m not a wood scrounger, I have gotten a few yard trees from friends but it usual that they have offered it I didn’t seek it out.

I work in an industrial area and recently this wood has caught my eye. When I asked if it was up for grabs the guy told me it was hemlock. There is usually a rather large pile so, I grabbed some to see how they will burn. The are fairly heavy so I’m not too optimistic on the MC.

The 2x4 will be made into kindling used this year.
The larger stuff is pretty wet from sitting out in the rain. My plan is to get the surface moisture out then test the actual MC. Maybe this year maybe not.

it looks to me to have been kiln dried at one point. I could be completely wrong that tho.

If it was dry before, it will dry faster the second time.. if your supplies are running low, consider looking for dead oak branches that this recent windstorm may have downed... I’ve found that those dry quickly and put off a ton of heat...

Thanks, I have plenty of wood. I have looked at this wood pile daily as it very close to my work site. It took me less than 5 min to put it in the truck. There are much longer pieces. I just thought if I could grab some on the way home and mix it in it might help me on the way to dryer wood in the long run. And it was free so there is that...

Had a similar experience for a kindling grab when 500 Mugo pines came in on Monday. They were stacked using 1x1 cedars. Saved them all and cut them with a Stihl MS193t. Took about an hour to cut it all 16 to 18 inch lengths get it loaded and clean up the mess. IMG_20200228_144512070.jpg

If its free and it burns why not take it. Already made into split size just cut to fit into your stove.
Keep hanging out with us Warner and we'll turn you into a scrounger yet!:tree:

If it's free and easily accessible, then its perfect for stuffing the stove on the weekends when you're around.

Good grab, hemlock seems to be naturally heavy stuff whenever I find it so it’s weight doesn’t change so much dry. Hopefully it’s just surface wet like you say, happy btu burnin’ :)
