Not that I can recall with ash. Have had some oak that we call petrified that is a bear to cut. Burns fantastic.

I have not that i can recall. Some of the locust ive been hoarding is like that though! I imagine barkless off the ground would be tough.

Yes, ash is what I was cutting when my brand new chain started to make too many fines.

Confirmed it later, but yep, the chain needed a touch up at least

I've cut lots and lots of ash through the years but never came across any that made me think it was petrified.

Yes Horkn, i forgot to mention the chain shooting dust in stead of chips. I almost found myself doing one of my biggest pet peeves i see on you tube all the time, the chainsaw rock!! When people rock the saw back and forth and do a dance and there pushing into the wood

All of the ash here is fairly soft. Just a little tougher than poplar. Been cutting some for a neighbor. Yard trees standing dead. Full of wierd things. Found a flip flop in a fork of one of them.

There are 2x that has happened to me that it was enough to stick in my memory. I have always wondered what was up with them 2??? Then last fall I cut an ash that was wind damaged that cut like a dream but when I went to split it my 8# maul just bounced, WTH??? I left it sit and am curious when I can get back to it if a winter sitting in rounds changed its attitude. I have never seen an ash that stubborn!?

We have pretty high winds where I live, and our ash is super resilient. 8# fiskars just bounces right off, giving lots persuasion. I had to buy a hydraulic splitter to even have a hope of splitting it with 20” long rounds. At 16” I could just barely get them to pop after many whacks with the 8 pounder. Interesting observations all.

Every time I've had that experience, a hard look at the chain revealed I hit a rock or embedded metal at the start of the initial cut and it wasn't nearly as sharp as I thought it was.

Same here, even the ash that won't split without hydros cut with the saw just fine as long as I have a chain in good condition.
