I am putting in a horseshoe driveway and paving it so I had to cut a few trees down. I decided removing the stumps would be better than grinding them so we don’t get sink holes down the road. I dug and ripped out a pine stump with ease last weekend. I knew this oak would be different. After 4 hours of digging, chopping, and pulling with my f250 I finally got it out. The hole is just about 6’ across for reference. I now have a new found respect for the settlers who cleared everything by hand!
For your future jobs we ground a lot of stumps and in your case if you had ground them with a decent machine and got the whole stump ground we would clean the hole out fill with #2 modified and tamp it with a jumping jack never had a problem even now with that large hole you should compact your backfill or you still could end up with a sinkhole as for the settlers who did it all by hand I think they used a lot of explosives to remove stumps still would have been a hell of a lot of work they have my respect also JB
Really makes you think. Imagine some of the stumps from the original old growth forests that dominated the terrain when Europeans first started to settle here. Must have been some monsters! Those men and women worked so hard.
