The guy i bought it from didnt know what he had. (neither did i at the time) He did small engine repair on the side. He offered it to me and i declined. I went home and looked it up. Even with a scored piston its a 200 saw. I got two good (20") chains with it as well.
I wasnt well versed about Stihl saws at the time. Between that and the FHC ive become well versed in them.
Had that not happened id probably be cutting with my 290 with its 16" bar!

I don't want to hijack this thread, but with all the talk about the 462 I thought this would be a good addition. What kind of prices are you all seeing on this unit? I'm about to pull the trigger on a ms462cm, but curious how prices differ around the states. I have found $1125.00 as list and a few +/- ($100.00) quotes on a ms462c (no mtronics with 25 inch bar). Still waiting on cm pricing. It seems to be a mystery on the mtronics pricing.

462c is the mtronic. I haven't seen a 462 with the adjustable carb other than ones being shipped in from Europe. Not saying they aren't available here but my dealer didn't have any.
My dealers MSRP on the 462c was $1139. I forget what bar length. Maybe 20 or 25. I bought mine PHO.

Thanks farmersteve. That's odd and now I'm a bit baffled. It was my dealer that told me they were two different saws and he would get me a price on the mTronic. I assumed what you are telling me to be correct as that is what I thought as well. The dealer insisted there was an adjustable carb option and that was what he was giving me at $1125.00. Not that I want it anyway, but now I feel a little foolish doing my price search. I'm going back to the dealer today and raise the roof a little. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

    What is PHO?

PHO. Power head only. Some dealers won't sell like that but mine will. Mine just says 462C on it and is Mtronic. In the pic you will see the box is marked 462/462c. That's another thing that some dealers won't even give you the box.

Well, I got to the dealer this morning and talked to the same Mr. Jr. WannaBe Salesman. He was confused and "assuming" the 462c was the same configuration as 261 vs 261c. He thought the price he was giving me was for a straight 462 "non mTronic" which we know now is incorrect, does not exist and is actually the 462c mTronic unit. He felt bad about it and I said "no harm done and thanked him for his youthful exuberance, but next time it's gonna cost him a jug of bar oil."

Still looking for the best price. Too much snow here for me to get anxious just yet, but I am hopeful to wrap this up by month's end. I have two dealers near me that I have bought saws from. I also have a connection with a tree trimmer that gets a discount when he buys his saw, but is 1.25 hours away. Local guys are offering $1100.00 - $1139.00. My buddy has a quote (apples to apples) for $975.00. A local purchase means a lot to me, so I'm waiting to talk to my usual guy (that I should have started with instead of Jr.) and see if there's a little wiggle room or at least an additional bar and chain combo to sweeten the deal.

This is what I’m seeing for prices also. One place I looked at will give 10 percent off during their open house that will last a week.

I’m just skimming this thread again so forgive me if this is a repeat.. I got my 462 last week with a 28” light es bar. It is nearly perfectly balanced. I got the feeling from my local shop like they haven’t ordered too many 462’s yet because everyone that worked there was astonished when they picked it up by how light it was. I guess in my area only pros buy saws at that level and they seem to prefer the 461 with the adjustable carb. Much easier for them to maintain themselves I guess. Thanks Road-side Oak. All good on the "reverse engineering.":D We've all done it. Congrats on the new saw. I can't wait to join in. This is good information to know regarding the balance of a fueled-up saw. I was a bit skeptical on the balance when I picked up an empty saw with a 25" bar. I'd like to hear you thoughts on the performance outside of the balance issue, especially with a 28" bar.

With just a mm a 462 will oil and pull a 28” full comp no issue.

I have only one day “logged” with the saw so far but I was pretty impressed with how it handled the 28” bar. It made quick work of 33” diameter fresh cut red oak. I had the bar buried to the dog the whole time . If I laid into it too hard It did bind up a bit but when I eased off to moderate/light pressure the saw pulled right through the log on it’s own. Keep in mind My previous experience is with a 45cc ms259 with 18” bar so I may be easily impressed.

Sounds good. I don't cut much big stuff anymore (older age):headbang: so I only have the 20" on mine. Touch the chain to the log and hang on. Did you turn the oiler up on your saw?
