We were having dinner with friends recently when the guy says he's building a small cabin for the grandkids. Told him I'd be glad to help, so my brother and I went over today to lend a hand. He already had the floor, corner, door frames done with half logs on the deck. Didn't get very far, but it was fun. Got to use a small saw with a ripping chain on it. This is about where we came in. This is just before we called it a day......one more log went up in the wall to the right of the door.
Forgot to mention....he had a Stihl with the easy (EZ?) start.......dang near scared the crap outta' me. Pulled the rope, and a second later is when the saw started. Took me a couple times to stop laughing it was so easy and unexpected. Weird.
Sure will Allan. His wife came up with an idea to cut a v-groove on the bottom of each log to help it sit flat on the one below. He was going to spline everything, which would have been more work. Her idea got rid of most gaps. I think I'll suggest 1/4 logs for the corners, unless someone comes up with a gooder idea. I forgot to ask him how they took off the bark, but it looked like they used a draw knife. The logs are Poplar.
It's in a very cool spot up a slight hill above a small stream. The big framed opening in the wall with the logs we did today is for a big window that looks down toward that. The plan is to have a loft in there too. 2x6 for the rafters, but I didn't ask about the roofing material. Lucky G-kids.
Campinspecter built a small cabin at the back of our "city" lot and our girls just loved it. When we moved to a more rural place, it moved with us. Had to leave it behind in the last move back here and it was hard to do. Those grand-kids are going to remember that cabin for a loooong time. Lucky kids!!!!
I really think their grandkids will like this too. Should be fairly weathertight, and they plan to put a small wood stove inside. I just hope that gets done right.
I was amazed when we started looking into many old cabins in northern MI to find that most were made with poplar. Well, they certainly are easy to work with being soft and all. Lighter too. We'll be watching for the final pictures Dave. btw, did it warm up for you today? Chilly all day here with that wind and temperature in the 50's.
Not sure it got any warmer than about 55 today. Windy too, which obviously makes it feel cooler. Was doing some drywall work at my sis-in-law's for a couple hours and when I walked outside, I was shocked........it had cooled down. Forecast for today called for sunny and about 60, a couple days ago. Guess they were wrong. Supposed to hit 38 tonight too. Closed all but a couple windows and may get a very small fire going. Just because I can.
I hear you Dave. The sun did shine today but the trouble was, with all those clouds we couldn't see it. Funny that this morning the lack of sun was the first thing my wife took note of saying that it was supposed to be sunny and 68 today. I see now 44 is forecast for tonight. Might light a small fire in the morning.
