Any ideas? Is this more than I can safely handle?

42" bar swallowed up pretty good by this big ol' oak.


You can see how I noodled 3 times vertically before bucking. The pieces were still hard to manage until noodled down.

 

If you have to ask if its more than you can handle it most likely is. Personally my eyes are bigger than my back, saw and trailer combined.

Was that hard to cut/noodle? The elm I just did was “harder than a whores heart” . It was 3 large trunks basically starting at the stump. On the sides where they grew against each other was very dense & tough on chains.

It's oak so yes, very hard wood if that's what you meant.

Mike, I saw that log posted on either craigslist or FB marketplace. I figured it was left by some tree hacks who didn't complete the job or the homeowner was to cheap to pay to have it cut up/removed. No way was I going out there for free...those big ones are too much like work in my opinion Haha. Glad you got the score though and are happy. They will make some really nice clean splits. Any room left in your yard??

Exactly right jrider. It was a cheap tree drop. The yard is still full of the entire canopy plus the big remaining piece of the trunk where it begins to branch out. From what I gathered it was posted by a cheap landlord. I felt bad for the family living in the house dealing with constant scroungers coming in and out of the yard. I can’t imagine anything left is going to move at this point until the landlord decides to pay someone to do it. For me it was good find and a good chance to fire up the new saw so I am very thankful for that. It’s not like I have a ton of space for tree companies to drop off loads like some people!!! Lol. Yes the yard is slowly but surely filling up but I can always just stack it higher right? Sky is the limit!!!

 

Almost forgot. I found some of the metal but luckily I was able to avoid it with my new chain!

I'm right there with you... Big Oak slabs and quartersawn trim around the house sure looks good. Our sawmill only does 26" stuff, but thats larger than most anything in our woods. We do have a couple big Red Oak and White Oak on the back side of the river, but I have to get the creek crossing fixed before I can start dragging those out.
