Dayum, you guys are tryin to kill me of a Coronary or somethin 41",, a couple or three 3-4" live edge slabs for table tops would leave PLENTY of Firewood Some people have all the Luck, we rarely even SEE Oak around here, unless it is a Yard Tree Removal, 32-41" Diameter?? Fuhgitaboutit Doug
Not for anything Road-side Oak, but you did an excellent job! Very impressed. A trunk that large off the ground is a huge plus. Gravity works to your advantage when done right and carefully planned. A great first outing for your 462 as well. How do you like it? What was the largest wood you had bucked up to this point?
Thanks buZZsaw BRAD . Yes that the largest diameter I have cut myself. I have cut up to 24” ish in the past and I have scrounged bigger rounds around the 40in mark... but hats off to dahmer on those 41” beasts. The saw was amazing. Loved having the deco valve for easy starts and the longer lightweight bar was a dream to handle and made it much easier to keep my cuts straight (compared to my ms250 with 18” bar). I did notice that a brand new chain on a bigger bar seems to stretch a lot more than I’m used to. I had to stop after every few cuts to tighten up. My only “issue” with the saw is that it could definitely use a pair of bigger saw dogs. I have noticed others complaining about this before and when trying to lever the saw in difficult positions I could see that bigger dogs would be helpful. That is easy to remedy though. Anyone have recommendations on where to get good aftermarket saw dogs?
I bought a matched twin set of these on ebay...$25 maybe with S/H. Not OEM but cool looking and work great. Wood pictured was some nearly 36" diameter ash i bucked a month ago. 36" bar on my 460.
Road-side Oak, I don't know about Stihl, or if you're interested in a full wrap handle, but Husky's full wrap bar kits usually come with "Junk Yard Dawgs", Big and Mean Doug
Here’s the second biggest oak I got given to me. Went down in a storm and took a crap load of other trees with it. We got 1 1/2 cords of wood just from the trees it took down.
I bought my big dawgs at Baileys. Look it up, nice place to know about Excellent job on that oak. Now you’ve got some experience with the big boys. Fun stuff LOL
Well at least that one wasn't Dining Table Top size, maybe a few good Live edge coffee tables there, bark is a bit chewed up, but Stihl plenty of dimensional lumber there to be had, with lots of good firewood left over to boot You guys Hate me or somethin?? Doug
The LORD says ask and you shall receive, I get all my firewood from people that want it out of their yard or it came down in a storm and they want it gone. Here’s a couple pics of some wood that would have been awesome going thru a band saw mill.
Just got to the pot a little...... White oak stump cutoff from a tree we took down... 42"+ white oak log, 6' long was all the 'Bota could handle. It was 46" where we cut it off the rootball.
Got ours from Bailey's also. Wound up shorting them a little, maybe 1/4-3/8"...a little to much leverage for the 362, made it grab to much. Should be fine on your new saw, which is sweet, by the way. One other thing, go to your hardware store to get the bolts and nuts to put them on...they are $$ if you get them elsewhere.
Very nice job, glad you got the wood, did it safely and had some help. Did the other guy sign up yet?
Welcome to the club. Great bunch of folks here sharing knowledge and humor. That is some nice rounds you have there.
I also got the big dogs from Baileys. My 460 came with a tiny dog on one side only. My 7900 came with the round retro looking dogs. I think they work better than the big spikes from Barkley’s. If I was cutting big firs, or other thick bark softwoods in the NW, the spikes would be perfect.
ive got this in the woods at the moment. A crotch tear would be what I call it. Thought it might make a nice table top if some was shaved off the top. What do you think? Find some nice grain patterns under that?
