Too many variations in causes of and kinds of back troubles. If your Dr. doesn't have the PT skills maybe (s)he can recommend one. There possibly will be some exercises you can and should do and some you should absolutely avoid. What might be good for one person could be devastating advice for another.
I had good luck at a sports therapy place that a PT understood my lower back problem(s) and made lots of recommendations that have worked well for me.

My issue was mainly sciatic pain, the stretches in this book worked for me. The book talks about your discs getting mis-shaped because you are mostly upright bending forward and the stretching exercises help to redistribute the fluid in the discs to alleviate the nerve pain. I'll second the advice to strengthen your core and hydrate. I do Pilates everyday.

As silly as it sounds, I notice my back pain acts up when I dont get decent sleep.

That’s not silly at all. When I had my back injury, every doc I talked to said “YOU NEED TO SLEEP.” Your body heals at night while you rest. And it’s the only time that your back isn't supporting your torso.

Never tried one myself. I can certainly see that helping greatly.

Agreed 100%. Every time I end up with back spasms from aggravating my back I was dehydrated. I’ve gotten to the point where I can feel the tweak starting in my back when I’m dehydrated and it’s an automatic no go until I’m fully hydrated and that little warning tweak is gone. Doesn’t have to be heavy lifting, pretty much anything involving bending over if I feel that slight tweak feeling that always goes with dehydration. I’ve been through it enough to have proved it’s not psychological.

So true. The human body is 60% water. It’s designed to be 60 or more all the time. So a slight dip in that percentage can really effect you. I get terrible headaches when I’m dehydrated. I also notice that my back feels better when I’m fully hydrated.

I hear ya. I’ve blown my back out sneezing, scratching, stretching and sleeping :)
Your right about the tweak. It’s a warning. Most normally healthy people it will go away pretty quick. Those of us who don’t drink much water or already have back issues it’s more important to know what it means.
My back is permanently damaged leaving me partially paralyzed in the left leg. Still did 20 years in the Mason union in that condition. It told me everyday what condition I was in and where the limit was.
