Few weeks back i wanted to cut remnants of the Asplundh wood around here. The area i wanted to cut was being worked by another hoarder. Not having a score to cut i took a ride to scout (something i havent done in ages) and found this. Well traveled state highway. Ten minutes from home. December 2017 i scored several loads from state cutting just up from here and have scored other wood over the years on it as well. Decent ash with bark coming off (EAB victims) and manageable size rounds. Another score im gonna have to work to get the wood. 20-30' off the road, down an slight embankment. Started in today. Left job earlier to have enough daylight to work it. First couple pics are what i grabbed today. Looks like the tree guys played pick up sticks in reverse. Long lengths for me to buck which i like. At least its not huge otherwise id probably leave it. Hate carrying big logs uphill through a tangle. 45 minutes to hack, section, move, buck, and load! Ill be going by this almost every day for the next 2-3 weeks so an ongoing thread.
Do you use log grabbers of any sort so that you can haul 2 of those with each trip? I have found that greatly increases efficiency on loading those mid sized rounds...and my back likes an even side to side load better too!
funny i thought of that while loading. In this case i bucked sections, flip flopped and/or carried them next to the guard rail then bucked. Pulled PU up from where it was safely parked, was able to load some and some had to move to the pavement side then load. PITA of sorts but i do what i hafta. I did try the Blue ox log tongs (or something very similar) once when i went cutting with Ctwoodtick. Didnt really like them, but thats me. Picked up a heavy red oak quarter with it. When im hoarding i get in the zone going BTTW and think they'd slow me down. I guess im a creature of habit. Another thing id lose or have get wet in my PU. Between working and hoarding there's enough stuff in the cab as well.
You just don't stop. LOL Good for you Brad , I need to take a lesson from you. I don't mind working and consider myself a hard worker but you sir take it to a new level. Brad = Energizer Bunny in disguise.
Thanks. Im always on the look out for a scrounge. This is one of those scores i have to work for. Ill nibble away rather than cut a full load as ill be cutting before or after work for the most part.
Lots of fun here........... and I also found Brad on here ; LOL He lives right up the road from me ; who would have ever thought , small world. Thanks for the welcome.
If you get a chance, be sure to try the Husky brand of log tongs. They have to be the best ones out there and we've convinced several folks of that at our GTG's. Brad, looking at those pictures, you'd have a ball coming to cut in our woods. lol
If i were to get some those would be the ones. Ive heard you speak very highly of them multiple times. Im not sure if the state or a tree company did the tree work in my pictures. Either way it was not left for a hoarder to easily scrounge. There are no yards and its just wooded swamp land. Not visible either as one drives by which is a plus for me as no worries about it being taken. I have a ball cutting in any woods, but a FHC members woods even better!
Hey CTwoodtick ; I have to ask . What part of this beautiful state are you in. It just so happens that Brad and myself are in the same town and about a mile from each other , only found that out after joining here. Also both happen to be "buzzsaws" really strange coincidence right there.
Not sure if its that brand, but i have those as well. I think they work really well, especially for those pieces that you need both hands to pick up, but are then small/light enough that you could tote another piece IF you could pick one up.... The brand i bought had a couple different sizes/lengths depending on what length wood you cut, but due to their obvious flexibility, you have a range of length you can work with.
