Thanks to you I had my first "Cull Rack" experience this past weekend! I didn't find anything that I was crazy about or and amazing deals so I didn't grab anything, but now that I know what it's all about I'll be sure to check it out on each visit. Care to share any secrets? I was at the Wallingford Lowes Saturday and saw all the same exact bundle of 2x10's tagged at $50. Is there more haggle off the reduced marked price if you talk to someone? Or do you just have to get lucky? Thanks again for sharing the tip about the racks!
These are 2x12's. Didnt see any 2x10's. there was a couple bundles of 2x8's Just a matter of timing. There was one guy who would work with me, but havent seen him in a while if he even works there anymore.
Brad, that looks like Incense Cedar, which is used a lot for board fences, gates, trellises, lattices, planter boxes, bird houses, and the like out here in the west. Good find.
Thanks. I know it isnt Western Red Cedar as im familiar with the grain and color based on cedar roofs ive installed. Any cedar stock is very expensive and for a buck each vs. $25 each it was a NO BRAINER! I wouldve paid a lot more. Had to buy an 8' 6x6 CVG WRC for a porch i was restoring years back and i cant remember what i paid then. Think it was 2006. 3' remnant chunk of that hanging around somewhere. Cedar is getting scarce at the old school lumberyards around here as PVC stock has taken its place.
Another good score today. Stopped to get some things for the job im doing. Had to check the cull rack. Got 80' (8 - 10' pcs) of 5/4" x 6 knotty cedar decking for $20. $2.50 each...markdown price was $30, but i haggled. original MSRP was $16 each. I checked for damage/problems...one with forklift damage, another had punk from the mill, one with a missing knot. Didnt take them apart to check others.
i have a soft spot for cedar stock. Told myself id buy no more, but the cull rack is at the contractor entrance and i walk right by it. The guy i deal with likes me and practically hands it to me! He was at lunch when i was there. Took my time getting my other things until he came back. Im curious as to what damage is on the others? As long as one side is good.
Hey Brad, that's the early stages of what we call "Pecky Cedar" the "Peck" part starts out like that then develops into larger deteriorated areas that are shaped like cigars and dark brown. I'm pretty sure it is a fungus the trees carry - and always have had. It occurs mostly toward the butt end of older logs. They sell pecky cedar as it has a certain look, but they didn't always. I remember standing in the mill at Roseburg Lumber watching otherwise perfect clear 1X12's 16 and 24 foot long just being gobbled by the chipper back in the seventies. Entire logs worth, thousands of feet an hour. I knew it was a crime even then, but the mill sure would smell good.
Im familiar with the term. I watch reruns of "Swamp Loggers" and one episode they recovered pecky cypress. It was interesting to watch them load this one humongous log and delivery it to the specialty mill. What a crying shame to see nice cedar chipped. I LOVE the smell. WRC my favorite! Watch me work with WRC stock and ill sniff the fresh cut end like a drug fiend! If its wet even better. Do they make WRC air freshener? Ive seen the Roseburg stamp and ends of lumber.
