The dump is a couple miles away from my house. I'd have to fly the drone really low, to determine wood species! Might irritate people.

There you have it, 2 days' worth of dump scrounge... hope it continues next week! IMG_20200131_40128.jpg
From left to right, oak, honey locust, a little mulberry, cherry, Bradford pear, and a little tree of heaven. The battery saw is very convenient when you have to be moving pieces around a lot.

You havent posted any dump scores in a long time!

FYI Asplundh was working in Hudson earlier today. Cross over the river and turn right. They were down past Walmart a little ways on the left.

That added up to a nice "gourmet sampler" pile of firewood Midwinter ! Glad you are still using the saw. Funny thing is I used that saw today when I picked up the car from the service dealer a few towns away. On the way back I cut up some long dead ash from a fallen trunk that was about 13-14 inch diameter. It was just about past prime though even though the whole trunk was suspended off the ground. I cut through pretty fast and thought the trunk was punky, but no that wasn't it, it had a hollow that was about 7ft long and loaded with the biggest nest of carpenter ants I've ever seen! After bucking first and then separating the pieces I discovered the black berry filling...ugh! Then I had to keep smacking the logs onto a huge stone to empty them of the thousands and thousands of ants. It was a real pain and probably why I forgot to snap some photos. I cut some logs further towards the trunk that were ant free and solid so I will return for the rest of the trunk (about 12 more feet) another time (probably when back at dealer) . I promise to photo the operation.

Nice work. Handy thing that battery saw. Never scored mulberry or HL. My bucket list scrounge!
Midwinter has Asplundh finished in your area?

Hate it when that happens! At least you were far away from your own yard.

Asplundh is done on my street, but they could be in town somewhere. Mwalsh9152 said he saw them the next town over.

47C2343B-AA41-4E3C-8816-AD241A588BE4.jpeg Technically not a car hoard, as I used the barrow and walked about half a mile. It was Balanced surprisingly well, but still a nice workout on a cool morning, as long as the back doesn’t complain tomorrow. I think it is some kind of spruce or fir? Should be nice kindling or fire pit wood.
Tall straight trees with drooping needle like foliage on the remaining landscape specimen.

Well of all the small branch scrounges I decide post I choose today when I got willow wood :loco:  Hey I could've lied and said it was cherry, but I don't think I would've gotten away with it. Well with temps like this it's a good time to burn wood of this low caliper. It kills me to burn my coveted woods like oak on these warmer days.

Speaking of oak I did get this one big dry crotch section also! I split off what I could, but the rest will need noodling.

Sorry the wood is already split, I didn't photo the downed tree I cut the branches from, but its a tangled mess of weeds and vines back where I got it and it would have been hard to make out. I got it all in the cemetery by the back creek embankment along with some long dead ailanthus that was rain soaked and not shown here. I split it and it should be dry in about two weeks. The willow is ready to burn tonight, but just hope it doesn't burn like rolled newspaper. I think I will mix in some ash or oak in - about 1 to 3 parts willow which should keep things humming along.

Looks like you didn't have much trouble splitting the willow. I've had some large rounds that were impossible. Tell us how it burns, I can't remember, it's been so long.

No, it was so dry it split with only a half heart'd swing. Also the branches were no more than 6 inch diameter, but I know what you mean if you get large rounds. The wood can be so soft it just absorbs the maul without splitting especially if there's knots. I'll let you know how the stuff burns

Midwinter I might have an oak for us in Windham by Cobbet pond. Close to the road, and gravity will be our friend to get it to the vehicles.

I'll let you know when I can get a better look at it.

Update on the Willow wood fuel.

As expected it burned at about 60% of the heat output as oak and other good hardwoods. It sort of simmers away is the best way I can explain the burn characteristics and it eventually ignites the secondary burn tubes after about 20-25 min. I put about one split of ash to 4 splits of willow and it definitely needed it since the willow leaves no coals only papery ash. I was only filling the stove with the 5 splits - about half full since I didn't need much heat

It was actually the perfect wood for this warmer weather as my drafty old house is having no problem staying warm. That said I would never bother to cut up green willow and waste time and yard space seasoning it. It's definitely a field find that should come ready to burn and even then you'd have to decide if it was worth it or not. Today I opted to take some because the weather has just been too warm to waste my better seasoned hardwoods.

It was so mild today I even went a period with the stove not burning since the afternoons sun was enough to keep the house warm until an hour after sunset. I used that down time to do some maintenance on the blower including removing dust from the squirrel fan blades and then oiling the bearings. It was starting to sound like a jet plane was idling inside the house haha. It's better now, but overall the fan has been getting a little noisier every year. I might get another yer or two out of it before replacing.
