Never tried this before, but previous owner did often. In fact, the first time we looked at the house, he "grilled" burgers in the stove for us. (I was sold on the house at that point). I did some ribeye and New York strips, Tator's in foil, and rolls on top. Guessing you all might like a pic or five... first up i set in a chunk of I beam to use to hold a skillet up with, and also the foiled Tator's went in. next, after pre-heating the cast iron skillet, I Laid in some marinated, seasoned steaks to sear then I put a foil pan with rolls on top for a few minutes steaks done and out. Butter added(should have been added much earlier) ready to eat! This will definitely become a norm. Not steaks, it cooking in the stove. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That steak looks darn good. I cook in ours quite often ; either in a small dutch oven or in foil packets. Baked potatoes wrapped in foil on the coals are always good. Now after seeing that picture I need to go eat breakfast.
I've been cooking on the grill a lot in the past few weeks, at times when the stove would be in a decent coaling stage. I need to grab a brick, and a cooking grate so I can do it in the stove like I've been thinking of. I like the idea of a pizza in there too. Need to experiment.
Hey screwloose , I noticed that too and was going to compliment him on that. Will have to look in scrap pile now to see what I have laying around. That's a great idea.
Can’t take credit for the I beam. But it does work well. I have an old iron pot, that someone drilled holes in the bottom of, next to the stove and I put the beam in it to cool for a couple hours after use. It’s gets a tad warm I also have a “fish basket” style wire cooker for a grill that I use for steaks or burgers if I don’t feel like messing with the cast iron. Either way it’s a little smelly.
