Very nice, Fox! I read (on the internet, so it must be true ; ) that some brands of splitters won't take that style of limiter. It will pull the wedge off the end of the cylinder rod. I really want a stroke limiter, so I'll be watching for any updates on this mod.
I’ve put 2 cords through the splitter with the stroke limiter. So far it’s working great. Much faster. Wish I’d have done this years ago. The ability to bypass it has been handy while splitting for my friend’s shop stove and for getting big rounds under the wedge.
Finally made a stroke limiter for the Huskee 22. Simple rope and eye bolts. I'll get a video shortly. (I tried twice already and turned the video off instead of on... Here's a couple pics for now. Simple and all parts I had here. Simple and FREE!
Every year I drag the splitter out I think about fabricobbling a return limiter or an auto cycle setup. You guys have inspired me to do it this year.
Somehow I never saw this thread. I keep saying I need to make an engine protector and a stroke limiter for my H/V splitter The vertical 5hp Tecumseh probably will get replaced with a horizontal chonda at some point. It's fussy now that the linkage for the governor fell off and was lost. I'll show y'all my mod for that when I have a chance to take a picture of it. At the point my Tecumseh gets replaced I might just make the splitter a "walt style" on a trailer with a log lift.
Ok, I'm back with the promised video. I measure my wood with a Mingo Marker and buck to 16" (some of the best money I've ever spent). I got the stroke limiter set to stop at 19" The extra 3" seems like just the right gap to get the next round in and just enough room to work.
So I whipped up the rope/eye bolt stroke limiter, but, ideally, my splits are 22", so it saved about 3 seconds per stroke. I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but it 'feels' faster. I may just go ahead and build a mechanical, infinitely adjustable limiter. I've also included yesterday's split, and a couple pics of the jig I square chainsaw bars with.
We did a few mods to our H/V splitter... Built a platform for the foot area... Picture is upside down Helps when sliding big rounds under wedge... We also added flat bar stock for splitting stringy wood and a hatchet holder We added angle iron for table supports, legs under table and ramps to roll rounds up to splitter
I know just what you mean, using moms clothespins and some playing cards clipping them to the forkes on my bicycle made that sum booger fly! You youngsters might need to gooble that one.
I got tired of wrestling half-split Hickory rounds, so I modified my Huskee splitter. First, the wedge. Before: After: The 1/4" plate on the sides made the wedge wider, splitting the wood both sooner and wider. The sharpened edge made it go easier into the wood. Then the anvil, I added a 2" thick plate: The added 2" closed the horrendous gap between the wedge and the anvil - I'm sure at the behest of the Safety nazi Police - splitting the wood all the way to the end. Thanks for looking!
I eventually sheared the bolt holding the wedge on the shaft. Easy fix. When I bought the splitter used, the PO gave me a few spare bolts. Maybe its always occasionally sheared one. Otherwise, the mod works great.
