I made a winch mount for the front of my dump trailer and a removable rear arch to suspend a log getting drug up on it from the rear. Copied from a few designs seen here on the web. Nothing exotic. The arch is set in stake pockets and doesn’t swing but stands straight up. Works well enough for logs. I’m trying to work out the best way to load big rounds that have been cut down to stove wood length though. They are still a PITA. Some ideas. 1. Rolling them up ramps. 2. Raising them like normal but this leaves them teetering on the edge of the bed. 3. Maybe a “trolley or cart” that the winch could pull up the ramp. 4. Modify the arch so it will pivot from front to rear which would swing the load into the bed. This seems the best idea so far. Open to suggestions or rigging ideas that keeps it a one man operation before I cut into the rear arch to make it hinge. Log tongs and a HF or Northern Tool pickup crane that swivels (that is what is planned for my dump trailer this coming spring.)
I put one of these on my splitter recently but had thought of using it on the trailer instead. Be really nice if could use a hydraulic ram instead of the jack in use with the dump hydraulic system! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
How about a hinged table that fits it rear stake pockets. If your arch is high enough it wouldn’t even need to be hinged. Just drop in pockets/rub rail underneath round. Get round suspended , fold table up, drop round on table and roll it in. Maybe just a table made from wood or another big round centered under pulley
No reason you couldn't plumb another line and put a hydraulic cylinder into the system on your trailer. My situation is almost opposite of yours. I am putting the pickup crane on the tongue of my dump trailer because my dump trailer was built with a hand pump hydraulic system and it is not working reliably at all. So plan on the pickup crane on the tongue with an electric winch on the back of the crane and then I can hook the winch line to the bottom of the front of the trailer and tip it this way. But also use the crane and tongs to load rounds or other things into the trailer.
If you already have a winch just tap one of these rafting dogs into a round and drag it on the trailer...I hear they work really well! Rafting Dogs | Wesco Industries
