During the week I was bummed out, a house not far from me had a bunch of black locust tree's lining the road and most of them were taken down during the week. The wood went to one of their neighbors so I was a little bummed. It's not often I see BL around here and this was a large amount of it. I was playing in the yard yesterday afternoon with the kids when I got a text from a tree service guy who feeds me wood sometime. It says "I have a large oak coming down are you interested?" I had some running to do so after that I hooked up the trailer and headed over. Hard to beat pulling up in a drive, loading it up and leaving. I managed a pretty full trailer load plus a few chunks in the bed, another guy with a 12K dump loaded up and another truck took half a bed worth or so. Here are some pictures so you know it happened. Here are a couple trailer shots. Some thin slices but overall they did pretty good on the lengths, either way it all burns. The price was hard to beat! Bed of the truck The mess that was already waiting, row on the left is pine, second row in is norway maple, some heaped up pine in the back, the rest of the heap mostly silver maple and tulip poplar with a dash of white oak and cherry. I have to find to sometime to run the splitter!

Yep, they're a pain to stack! I end up with a bunch of shorties when I get the tree service wood. 14 inch and bigger stuff usually gets stacked in the regular stacks. If I have a manageable amount I'll toss the short stuff on the top of a normal stack. If I have a bunch I'll stack them in a shorty stack with the bigger stuff on the bottom and shorter stuff on top. I'm looking to stop stacking the shorties and just heaping them in some ibc totes or somethings similar.
Yes tree service wood is never cut consistently. Half are too short and the other half need to get recut so there is an additional pile of cookies. I much prefer getting a load of logs. At most there is one odd piece per log when I cut it.
I've considered just having logs delivered more than once. It's hard to pass up a trailer load of oak for around 10 bucks in fuel and a couple hours of my time though.
This is true, even with some short pieces, you didn't have it run any equipment to get it. Just a bit of time.

Some of them were nuts. Notice the dolly and ramps in the bed of the truck. That makes them much more manageable. I wouldn't be loading many of those without the dolly! I'm 39 with a back that had surgery in 2011 my old man is 64 so we take it easy. Rolling and flipping is the easy part, lifting all the weight off the ground ain't gonna happen anymore. Great contact but tough not to get buried by it. He usually calls me when he has bigger trees coming down. A lot of soft maples that are 30-40" yard birds, it's usually 2 or 3 trailer loads to get those picked up. This oak would have been two loads if the other guy with the dump wasn't there to take half of it. Yep, in 3 or 4 years it will be! Honestly if all our ash trees weren't dead I'd be hard pressed to take oak. I hate the amount of time it takes for it to burn nice and in this big steel stove with a cat I notice very little difference between wood types. I'm far enough ahead where it doesn't matter anymore but it still annoys me.
