ATV recommendations

After seeing Slocum post about black locust I was thinking today it would be so nice to have a four wheeler with a little trailer. It would take no time at all to get a quick load cut up.

What says the FHC about types/brands of ATV? Just looking for recommendations at this time, not looking to buy yet.

 

We have a Suzuki Kingquad 450, and like it so much that I bought a used 500 this year.

The 500 need some TLC, but the 450 has been our workhorse for 11 years.

First bought the quad back in '08 as my dad's knees were bothering him enough that he was gonna quit hunting.

I financed it, and we split payments until he passed in '11.


Try to test ride some different models, see what you like best.

If you are in the research phase right now there have been a number of threads with the same subject matter around here...at least at first...until they went of the rails...

 

And it doesn't take much to do a nice job of towing a little trailer around...even a little 250 cc 2wd (read: cheap) will do a decent job

Sometimes some well maintained ones come up without too big of a price tag.

 

The atv I’m using to get the black locust is a 2003 Yamaha 660 grizzly. It has been very good to me. It has power, suspension and it’s reliable. I grew up riding Honda’s. My wife rides a 2007 Honda 400 rancher. It’s no power house but a nice atv. The Honda are bullet proof IME. I was hard on them growing up and they just kept going.
Have you thought about a side by side? With a dump bed? That will be my next purchase. Only down fall is they are a little wider than atv’s. Some have a 1000lb capacity for the bed. That’s a lot of wood!

 

Have one of those myself...its a beater, but good enough for me.

Truth.
Honda used to be the king...but the other big 3 brands have long caught up and have lots of options worth owning...and they all have their duds too.

And spendy!

 

I’ve got a 2010 Polaris 500 HO I bought used with 115 hrs on it and pull the Yutrax with duellies.

Absolutely bullet proof combo for my property. Lots of bones.

 

Have you priced a new grizzly?

 

Not sure if anyone makes a solid rear suspension any longer.. but I'm a big fan of independent rear suspension.

Solid rear is fine for puttering around, but going into the woods.. I prefer a nimble machine.

 

I'm thinking he meant side by sides.

They're definitely a couple bucks more than a standard quad.

 

I haven't...I left the dealership in 2006 and have kinda lost track of the price of new models...I am sure everything is spendy now. Heck I remember when my '86 350X was something like $2500 new! Am I showing signs of old age here?

Can am is the definite Cadillac of off road machines. Not the cheapest but engineered well. Drivetrain is solid. Outlander is the multi purpose type ATV. Lot of brands are built and sold on price point to sell volume and come with inherent flaws, also look into the mergers of companies and see who is making parts for other machines.

 

I have owned different brands. My Kawasaki Mule had to have part of the engine block replaced under warranty. A side plate wasn’t machined right so a lot of them had that issue. Otherwise it’s good, but I wouldn’t advise buying a used one, in the event that wasn’t fixed.

I am thinking for firewood hauling, a Polaris with hi/low and no shifting needed, or any other brand with the same features would be the way to go.

 

I was in your boat a few years ago and simply made my decision based on the dealer I was most comfortable with. Which happened to be the canam/skidoo dealer in town. All atv’s are great until you need something repaired or need a part to get back on the trail. Most dealer are happy to take your money when you are spending thousands but how good are they when you simply need advice or a question answered?

Heck I was in my dealer yesterday needing a voltage regulator for a 1998 skidoo formula S electric 380. Dealer looked up the part number, saw the cost ($120), then asked me for my phone number and text me a link for one on eBay ($15) that he found. He easily could have taken my money.

I also spent a ton of time looking at used ATVs but struggled to find anything in good condition at a good price. I ended up buying a leftover canam outlander L 450 for much less than people were asking for used ones. I think I paid $4500 out the door.
