I’ve had my sights set on this standing dead elm for well over a year now. I’m thinking it’s gonna yield a little more than one pickup load. It’s a pretty intimidating score, lots of work. but also lots of wood. There’s also going to be a lot of cleanup involved. I’ll probably burn all the brush and bark (lots of bark in big sheets) right there, if’n we ever get any snow cover. Did the same for a similar but somewhat smaller one about 150 feet away to the right last winter. Today I took down the branch sticking out to the left.(the one that looks like it is over the pickup) Didn’t get it all bucked & loaded and still had a small load. DBH is probably close to 48”
with a 48" DBH and a dead elm, a lot of work is an understatement. Being hoarders it doesnt bother us, does it? Great score Sandhillbilly Keep us updated on your progress

Still not 100% sure how to go about dropping it. Basically 3 trunks at about 4 feet off the ground. I’m hoping that they are grown together well enough at 2 1/2 to 3 feet to all fall together. Nothing around to get damaged if it doesn’t go as planned , except me and the dog. And she will be in the pickup a long ways away till it’s on the ground.
That’s a poser from that point of view in the pic. Have a few wedges ready and a couple plans. Safety first!
not sure if it was my best.... but yes, sarcasm! I guess I could get one of the dump trucks and pup trailer from work in there. But that’s kinda high sides to throw logs over.

Looks like fun! Good thing you got hydraulics to split that Elm! I think I’d use the dump truck and trailer option cause that’s going to be a heck of a lot of pickup loads!
That’s good wood!! I got two truck loads of solid dead elm from a friend over the summer. I hadn’t really burned a lot of it before this winter. That stuff burns GREAT! It burns hot and makes great coals. I’ve got some choochin right now!
I don’t think there’s gonna be enough rot to tell about, it all looks pretty solid. Will know more when it’s on the ground.
You sure that's elm? Does not have the canopy shape of an elm. Looks more like a big ol' cottonwood to me.
Yes it is elm, but you’re right I often have to look close as barks are very similar around here also
Well it’s down Fell exactly where I wanted & went as good as I could have hoped. Was planning to use the 372 with 28” bar to drop it. But I cut my notch and shut it off to do some looking before the back cut and never could get it started again. Thought I lost spark but now I’m thinking it was operator error because I got it running again in the shop after dark. So I took the 28 bar and put it on the 562 and laid it down. Stump measured 56”x54” (see pic )! 28x2 =56 so I had no bar to spare! With cleaning up and taking all the bark off as I processed it, I only got one full load in a full size long box pickup today. But it’s a pretty good load. To dark for a picture of it this evening. Here’s the pictures from today. Planning to hit it again tomorrow.
