I don't know about the wedge but that hand splitting axe is $160.00 and I don't see it doing any better than the cheap $20.00 hatchet that I use for splitting kindling.
Both of the products look cool to me, the price is just too high. I especially like that hand axe, good idea. Doesn't matter to me because I do not use kindling, my fire starter and full size wood starts great.
I'm torn here. On one hand, I totally agree with you, and am fully capable of doing everything I need with the cheap or free tools that I have. On the second hand, the thought that I'm going to be a better person if I just have fancy expensive stuff, appeals to me. Particularly stuff that makes big chunks of wood into smaller chunks of wood. That I then turn into ash. I'm just kidding about the second hand. Although I think I'm going to start wearing my sports jacket when I'm working in the woodlot, just to class the place up a little bit.
I want one for each hand so I can be the Edward Scissorhands. Watch me spin through the wood like the Tasmanian Devil now boys!!!! It'll be nothing but a blur of self stacking kindling coming from a cloud of dust.
I had to google Oliver Douglas, as I'm just a little too young (it's all relative) to have watched Green Acres, but you are exactly right. I just left the one world to live full time in the other, Green Acres- style. I've had a couple of neighbors say similar things, and didn't know what they were talking about until today. I don't mind being the butt of this joke!
It is showing now on one of the channels; probably hasn't been off the air since it first aired. I don't have a channel but I think MeTV. It is like Andy, everyone has seen Andy and Barney no matter what their age.
Yes, MeTV; 9:30 pm; go to MeTV – America's #1 Classic Television Network and see if you can find a channel in your area. The show was surreal. Arnold Ziffel was a pig that liked to watch westerns on TV.
Oliver Douglas wore suits to work in and he had a different suit for each job; a ploughing suit and a stump pulling suit.
I'm not a big TV person, but I think I'll have to check it out. I don't wear suits, but probably look like a noob to folks who really make a living in ag. Well, except when I'm cutting wood. Been doing that for over 30 years now, and can really carve it up when I get a head of steam. I seriously would like a tweed jacket to wear when I'm doing light work, like the Brits do.
Just more gimmicks. I watched him with the wedge and when he hammered on the second one his grip was further up the handle giving him a harder hit as oppose to the first wedge. Also the hand splitting ax is just another gimmick that does not give any advantage over what I use right now. This is my cheapo answer and it is very precise on where I want to split for kindling.
Somebody needs to show that guy how to start/pound a wedge...and his technique changed from the one he wasn't selling to the one he was selling.
If you choked your hand further up the handle on a hatchet, you'd get better control and would get similar results as the hand axe. FYI, its pretty apparent he never splits wood in real life.
