Ive decided to start hitting the four areas ive seen locust including one i posted about last night. This will be an ongoing thread of my adventure. The first one was right down the street from me. Ive driven by these logs since they were cut 4-5 years ago. Didnt know they were locust and from a distance i thought chestnut oak. Ive only learned of locust since joining FHC. Several trees were felled on the same hillside. A hoarder/burner lives right around the corner and had grabbed the other stuff. I never took any. Pulled the two logs out and bucked. Bark came off easily and no rot underneath. I was dropping them on the pavement to remove dirt etc. Almost sounded like i was dropping a piece of steel. Couple other logs farther in too. Had to fight my way through the saplings on the hillside to remove them. Found out BL DOES have thorns the hard way! Grabbed one of the shoots. One log wasnt quite bucked through and when i picked it up the small amount of wood holding them together was stringy and didnt snap. The suckers sprouting from the stump tells you how long its been there. A year ago, my normal MO was to take fresh cut, "green & clean" wood. If someone told me id be taking this and liking it, idve told then they're crazy! Less than a half hour for this load. Not a lot, but a good start of the quest. First log split...ants that were barely moving! One other round had them. This is some hard wood. It was starting to get dark and i was splitting with the Fiskars. Twice i saw sparks! Maybe half hour to split. Temporary stack at my friends, til i find a "permanent" spot. Decent pile of splits. (Small row in front) Back stacks are poplar. The quest continues this week. May cut some tomorrow!
While we all thought Brad was on a permanent quest we now find out its just beginning. Lord help us Go get em Brad. Leave no locust unturned
Haha! Ever since the locusts posts started seriously flowing here the last few weeks I’ve been eyeing some serious DBH locust down the road from me that came down who knows when in the last year. Lot of big standing locust, too. It’s all on an acre piece, roadside, town owned, right-of-way to access the river that flows parallel to my road. If I ever am able to schmooze my way into legally getting it, I’ll send some your way. Will take some pics on my way out tomorrow. I support the locust cause!
Brad there’s so much Locust down here on LI it’s incredible. I actually DONT like it too much. Im not a fan of the way it burns. I bypass TONS of logs lying around every day To each there own
The only bad thing about locust is it's usually got a bunch of ants in it. I do not like bringing them near the house. Great score though
Man dude, if you were closer we could clear the back of my land and build a firewood paradise. Im getting real close to doing that
Im definitely bringing my saw next time i go back to long island to visit my brother and family. Maybe Brad and i will split a uhaul, i go rt by him
Whats the biggest U haul and its weight capacity? Can you get a premium for locust up there Woodwhore ?
Not a fan of the way it burns. Very little flame and doesn’t “coal out” like Oak which is my personal favorite
I was going to ask the same Stoveshamster. Just curious myself. I have little experience with it so my verdict is still out. EDIT: disregard as i didnt read follow up posts
