Well I started on it last weekend, (posted those pics in another thread) and finished it up today. I ended up getting 5 nice truck loads out of it, stacked 3 at mom's and brought 2 home. Good wood, nice and dry, should be good to go this winter. Splitter and 555 did great, really liking them.
Nice oak ! You have a huge pile there split already. The oak I have been cutting is soaking wet and it's been dead standing too. That's a lot of wood out of one tree!
I love the Red, and we are loaded with it here. With that sap wood just about rotted off, it must have been dead a long time. Still, this winter might be pushing it; Those big trunks hold water for a long, long time. Some of those splits are pretty big, too. But I'm not there to heft the wood or stick a meter in it. Could be drier than I'd guess. Or maybe that Buck 261 can handle wood that isn't super-dry and still get a good secondary burn.
Wow, 5 loads of oak. Jealousy here Since it's already pretty dry get it stacked up & top covered & thru a hot WV summer, it will finish off seasoning . Some real big splits on the truck, good for long burn times ( if they fit )
All the splits on the truck were split into a lot smaller splits when I got them home, they were almost to big to handle. Lol... That pic is right after I pulled in my driveway at the farm.
Great loads! Standing dead is great, but I'd freshly split a few pieces and get a moisture reading just to see where your at if your planning on burning this upcoming season. Some of the best btu's out there- nice job!
Yep, I had to load up my mom's and stack it, so I just loaded the last load of blocks on truck to split when I got home, it was all that had not been split. I brought one load to my house already split last weekend, did not drag spltter up to her house this time. Trying to get it done as quick as I could, had a lot of mowing to do when I got home. Lol.... it never ends.
Nice pics! I love red Oak.. One of my personal favorites. It drys faster than White or Pin oak and the red oak splits like a dream. It almost "Pops" when it sees the wedge coming at it
